Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam
9th canto chapter 9th Text 33

evaṁ karuṇa-bhāṣiṇyā
vilapantyā anāthavat
vyāghraḥ paśum ivākhādat
saudāsaḥ śāpa-mohitaḥ

ŚB 9.9.33

Translation by Śrīla Prabhupāda:

“Being condemned by the curse of Vasiṣṭha, King Saudāsa devoured the brāhmaṇa, exactly as a tiger eats its prey. Even though the brāhmaṇa’s wife spoke so pitiably, Saudāsa was unmoved by her lamentation.”

Purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda:

“This is an example of destiny. King Saudāsa was condemned by the curse of Vasiṣṭha, and therefore even though he was well qualified he could not restrain himself from becoming a tigerlike Rākṣasa, for this was his destiny. Tal labhyate duḥkhavad anyataḥ sukham(Śrīmad-Bhagavatam 1.5.18). As one is put into distress by destiny, destiny can also put one in a happy situation. Destiny is extremely strong, but one can change destiny if one comes to the platform of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Karmāṇi nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhājām (Brahma-saṁhitā 5.54).”

This verse says:

evaṁ karuṇa-bhāṣiṇyā
vilapantyā anāthavat
vyāghraḥ paśum ivākhādat
saudāsaḥ śāpa-mohitaḥ

ŚB 9.9.33

“Being condemned by the curse of Vasiṣṭha, King Saudāsa devoured the brāhmaṇa, exactly as a tiger eats its prey. Even though the brāhmaṇa’s wife spoke so pitiably, Saudāsa was unmoved by her lamentation.”

In purport Śrīla Prabhupāda says:

So this is called an example of destiny. Destiny is karma-phala, that is results of your past karma, prārabdha karma. That is destiny. It is written, it is written. There is one saying:

"kapala likhana ke kariba āna"

Odia proverb

What is written in your destiny, nobody can alter it. It is strong, it says, destiny is extremely strong. Nobody can alter it; you have to have it. You have to reap its consequence. This is here. Saudāsa was cursed by guru Vasiṣṭha. Saudāsa was a very qualified king, many good qualities he had. But he did such thing that his guru Vasiṣṭha cursed him. Therefore, he turned into a Rākṣasa, tiger-like Rākṣasa. So, the brāhmaṇa patni, the wife of the brāhmaṇa, even though the brāhmaṇa's wife spoke so pitiably, Saudāsa was unmoved by her lamentation because he could not restrain himself. Because that is his karma-phala - it is destiny. He could not restrain himself from becoming a tiger-like Rākṣasa. This was his destiny - karma-phala. Karmāṇi nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhājām (Brahma-saṁhitā 5.54) Unless one comes to the path of bhakti, unless one comes to the platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one cannot change the destiny. Only Krishna can destroy it. Otherwise nobody can destroy karma-phala. It is very strong. In Brahma-saṁhitā it is said:

yas tv indragopam athavendram aho sva-karma-
bandhānurūpa-phala-bhājanam ātanoti
karmāṇi nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhājāṁ
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.54

One has become indragopa, indragopa is a tiny worm, reddish, looks reddish. Generally, they are found in rainy season in sandy places. We say indragopa. Do you understand? They are found here. I don't know whether they found here in Western country or not. I don't know it, whether it is found here. Yes. In rainy season we find, we say indragopa. A reddish worm. How? Why one has become indragopa? Another jīva has become Indra - Heavenly king, King of the Heaven planet king of the demigods. One jīva has become indragopa - a tiny, reddish worm, another jīva has become Indra - Heavenly king - Because of karma-phala. Because of their destiny. Do you understand? Their past karma. One who does very pious activities, he may be elevated to the heavenly planet, he may become Indra. He may become Indra. One who does very abominable activities, sinful activities, so he may turn into, he will get that birth, indragopa, that tiny insect, reddish insect. Because of karma-phala.

karmāṇi nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhājāṁ
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.54

But Ādi Puruṣa, Govinda, only can destroy karma-phala - the result, karmic reactions. Nobody else can do it. Therefore Prabhupāda Mahārāja says, 'destiny is extremely strong', do you follow? Destiny is extremely strong, but one can change destiny. How it will be changed? If one comes to the platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

- karmāṇi nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhājāṁ -

If he comes to the path of bhakti, comes to the platform of pure bhakti, Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

sarva-dharmān parityajya
mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo
mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

Bg 18.66

This is the most concluding instruction, most confidential instruction of Krishna in Bhagavad-gītā. One who, abandoning all varieties of dharma, completely surrenders unto the lotus feet of Krishna, then Krishna destroys all his sinful reactions, karmic reactions.Otherwise nobody can destroy. Nobody can destroy. Only Krishna can destroy. Unless one comes to pure platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness, karma-phala cannot be destroyed. Destiny cannot be changed or destroyed. Do you follow? Many, many instances are there. You will find there are 84 lakhs of species, isn't it? 84 lakhs. What are they? Bolo
Yes, 84 lakhs of species are there, yes!

jalajā nava-lakṣāṇi

Viṣṇu Purāṇa

Total 84 lakhs. Aquatics animals are 9 lakhs of types. Nine lakhs of types are aquatic animals. sthāvarā lakṣa-viṁśati- trees, mountains, they are sthāvarā. They are of 20 lakhs of types. kṛmayo rudra-saṅkhyakāḥ - kṛmi, kiṭa, pataṅga; worms, germs, insects - they are of 11 lakhs of types. pakṣiṇāṁ daśa-lakṣaṇam - 10 lakhs of types of birds are there. pakṣiṇāṁ daśa-lakṣaṇam - the animals, beasts, they are of 30 lakhs of types. And catur-lakṣāṇi mānava - 4 lakhs types of human beings are there. Total 84 lakhs. Do you understand? Total 84 lakhs. So, how it is determined and how one gets his birth? It is according to one's karma-phala. Do you understand? According to one's past, the results of past activity. That is known as destiny. Do you understand? One has become insect, one has to become tiger, one has become bird, one has become aquatic animal, one has become tree, mountain. These Nalakūvera, Maṇigriva, they became trees, isn't it? They were two sons of Kūvera, two Gandharvas in heavenly planets, higher planetary system. They did such karma, such activity, they took the birth of trees. Nārada muni cursed them. Do you understand? It is their activities - karma. Do you follow? This is karma-phala. Indra, the heavenly king Indra once, that is there, he disrespected the deva-guru Bṛhaspati, disrespected deva-guru Bṛhaspati. Understand my language? The guru of the demigods- Bṛhaspati. Once, Indra disrespected therefore Bṛhaspati cursed, "Become a hog!" So he became a hog. Yes. This is karma-phala - this is the result of his activity. He did such karma, he disrespected his guru therefore he became a hog. He completely forgot that once he was Indra - heavenly king, he completely forgot. Yes. Have you remembered what was your previous birth? Completely forgotten. Nobody is able to remember. So, staying in the mounts of stool, eating stool, one hog wife was producing hundreds, hundreds of children, all were eating stool. Hundreds, hundreds of years passed. Brahmā took pity on him. 'āre, this fellow was Indra, what is he doing now, eating stool?' He has completely forgotten, couldn't remember. So Brahmā came down and asked: "Hey, what are doing? Don't you know, you were Indra, heavenly King! What are you doing now, eating stool? Can't you remember." Brahmā said two, three, four times. He didn't listen; didn't listen, no, he didn't listen. Brahmā thought of, "Oh my words will never enter into his ears. My words will never enter into his ears. Why? Because he is so much attached. Such strong attachment he has for this material enjoyment - viśayāśakti, you understand? He has a very strong attachment toward this material enjoyment so my words will never enter into his ears. Unless this attachment is finished, he won't lend his ear to my words." Brahmā knows because Brahmā is Mahājana. Brahmā is Mahājana, one of the 12 Mahājanas. First Mahajana is Brahmā. Brahmā knows so Brahmā first killed his hundreds, hundreds of children, killed them. When the children were killed, he became angry, roared. Raising his tusk, he ran towards Brahmā, "Graaaah!" But what can he do? Brahmā is very powerful. Brahmā then said: "Hey, don't you remember?

You were once Indra. Now what are you doing?" Still, he didn't hear. Still Brahmā's words didn't enter into his ears. Brahmā again thought, "Oh, his attachment is not completely finished because his wife is there. Again he will produce, again produce children. Some attachment is there. Then Brahmā killed his wife. His children were killed, wife was killed. "Oh oh...oh! My children were killed, wife was killed!" Nobody was there. Then he became angry, ran towards Brahmā. Still Brahmā said: "Hey, what are you doing? Don't you remember you were Indra! You are now eating stool?" Then he listened because all attachment is finished now. Then he listened. "Oh, what are you saying? Indra? Heavenly planet?" "Oh, yes, you were in heavenly planet, you were king of the heavenly planet - Svarga rāja, Indra. "Do you want me to go there?" He asked Brahmā, "Do you want me to go there?" "Yes, you were there!" "Is stool available there? Is she-hog available there? Then I will go." Such attachment, material attachment is so strong! You see? are baba! There is amṛta there, amṛta - nectar! What is this stool? Nectar is there, what is she-dog? Angelic, very beautiful angelic girls are there, apsaras are there, denizens of Heaven there - very, very beautiful: Urvaśī, Menakā, Rambhā, your wife - Indra's wife Sacī, very beautiful woman, lady is there. What she-hog has? Still such attachment, such attachment, do you understand? That is what. Mahājana comes, sādhu comes, he speaks kṛṣṇa-kathā. How many are hearing really? In whose ears this kṛṣṇa-kathā is really entering? Is it entering into your ears, Achyutananda? One who has very strong attachment to this material enjoyment, this kathā will never enter into his ears, no. One may be sitting, he is only pretending that he is hearing, pretending. But really, he is not hearing. As long as this material attachment is there, very strong attachment, kṛṣṇa-kathā, bhāgavata-kathā, sādhur kathā will never enter into his ears. When the attachment will be completely finished, then he will hear. How many have come to get Kṛṣṇa? bolo! How many have come to get Kṛṣṇa? You take statistics. You will find very disappointing statistics, disappointing, very, very disappointing. Have you come to get Kṛṣṇa? No. Many have come, 'Nice, nice enjoyment, nice enjoyment will be available. Yes. We will join the society of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, nice prasad is available, car will be available, fly in the air, travelling in many, many far off countries. We'll go there, you understand, we will become Vaiṣṇava, sādhu. Many people will come pay daṇḍavat and give pranāmi. Some donation will be available.' Isn’t it? Very hard struggle - jīvan samgram - very hard struggle for existence. Material world - very hard struggle for existence, yes. Isn't it very nice to join in the society of Kṛṣṇa consciousness? Very easy, very easy, very nice arrangements are there, nice arrangement, enjoyment is there. Yes, you will earn so much, so much dollars, dollars. Do you follow? How many have come for getting Kṛṣṇa? They have this desire for enjoyment, do you follow? Mahāprabhu came. Mahāprabhu is Kṛṣṇa but Mahāprabhu came as a devotee. bhakta-bhava aṅgīkari - assuming the mood of a bhakta, devotee, Mahāprabhu came to teach us devotion - how to surrender unto Kṛṣṇa, how to render loving service unto Kṛṣṇa, how to get Kṛṣṇa. So how many understand Mahāprabhu? How many think that Mahāprabhu is so wonderfully merciful, wonderfully munificent, wonderfully magnanimous that He descended here to teach us how to surrender to Kṛṣṇa, how to serve Kṛṣṇa, how to render loving service unto Kṛṣṇa, how to cry for Kṛṣṇa, to get Kṛṣṇa, make your life successful, perfect in this very life? But as long as you have this material enjoyment, Mahāprabhu’s  words, Vaiṣṇava's words, sādhu's words, will never enter into your ears. Most of them think that 'Mahāprabhu will give us all sorts of enjoyment, enjoyment.' Mahāprabhu is like a gardener, mālī, yes. mālī hañā kare, you understand? brahmāṇḍa bhramite kona bolo!

mālī hañā kare sei bīja āropaṇa
śravaṇa-kīrtana-jale karaye secana

CC madhya 19.152

nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-prema ‘sādhya’ kabhu naya

CC madhya 22.107

So, wandering, wandering in lakhs, lakhs of brahmāṇḍas, in lakhs, lakhs of species, if one is fortunate, by the mercy of guru and Kṛṣṇa, he gets the bīja - seed of bhakti creeper, isn't it? Then when the bhakti creeper, the seed is sown then there is watering - śravaṇa, kīrtana. Then the gardener, the gardener's business is to sow the seed and water, watering is there - śravaṇa, kīrtana - hearing, chanting is the watering. The gardener does so. Mahāprabhu came as a bhakta, do you understand, like a gardener. He sowed the seed and He allows everybody to come and hear, do śravaṇa, kīrtana.

nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-prema ‘sādhya’ kabhu naya
śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte karaye udaya

CC madhya 22.107

Kṛṣṇa-prema is not so easily available, it is not. sadhya, not so easily. But śravaṇādi-śuddha-citta, you come to sādhu and hear kṛṣṇa-kathā with concentrated attention, surrendering unto sādhu, giving up all other desires, just surrender unto sādhu, one gets sādhu's mercy. Then kṛṣṇa-kathā will enter into your ears. By his mercy, you will develop kṛṣṇa-prema. Do you follow? So this is, question is here - the gardener. Mahāprabhu acted like a gardener - mālī. He sowed that seed then that creeper develops, regular watering is there - śravaṇa, kīrtana. Then creeper develops, grows, grows, develops then goes where?

upajiyā bāḍe latā ‘brahmāṇḍa’ bhedi’ yāya
‘virajā’, ‘brahma-loka’ bhedi’ ‘para-vyoma’ pāya

tabe yāya tad-upari ‘goloka-vṛndāvana’
‘kṛṣṇa-caraṇa’-kalpa-vṛkṣe kare ārohaṇa

CC madhya 19.154

It grows and grows and grows. It grows and goes above this brahmāṇḍa - material universe, then crosses Virajā, crosses Brahmaloka, Virajā, then enters into Paravyoma, the spiritual sky. Then it grows - but you should continue watering - śravaṇa, kīrtana. It is eternal, do you understand? Continued. Then at last it goes to Goloka Vṛndāvana - the topmost planet - Goloka Vṛndāvana.

 - ‘kṛṣṇa-caraṇa’-kalpa-vṛkṣe kare ārohaṇa -

The creeper, latā, wants support. So what is the support? The support is kṛṣṇa-caraṇa - the lotus feet of Krishna. That is the support, at last. The creeper, bhakti creeper grows and gets that support - kṛṣṇa-caraṇa, the lotus feet of Krishna that is like kalpa vṛkṣa, that is like a desire fulfilling tree. Do you follow me?

tāhāṅ vistārita hañā phale prema-phala
ihāṅ mālī sece nitya śravaṇādi jala

CC madhya 19.155

There, that mālī, the gardener, is engaged daily watering. Watering is śravaṇa-kīrtana, do you understand, engaged. Still, one should always engage, daily engage, everyday you should be engaged śravaṇa-kīrtana. That is watering. So then creeper will produce their fruit - flower and fruit. The fruit is prema, kṛṣṇa-prema is the fruit, prema-phala. Still, you should not cease this watering. This watering, śravaṇa-kīrtana should be continued. When this prema-phala is there then now the ripened fruit is there, the gardener gets the fruit. The gardener is Mahāprabhu, do you understand?

Mahāprabhu is the gardener. The gardener gets fruit - prema-phala. So he gets, gardener now, Mahāprabhu is gardener. He gets prema-phala. So when that fruit is there, He becomes very, very happy. ‘Now so many fruits are there. What to do? I am one gardener, how can I eat everything?’ Mahāprabhu is not selfish, you understand, not selfish. He distributes, do you follow? He distributes to everybody, everybody. He distributes to everybody. Mahāprabhu is mahā-vadanya, is the most munificent incarnation who, freely, indiscriminately gives kṛṣṇa-prema. Indiscriminately He gives kṛṣṇa-prema. Here it is mentioned in Caitanya-caritāmṛta you will find:

ataeva āmi ājñā diluṅ sabākāre
yāhāṅ tāhāṅ prema-phala deha’ yāre tāre

CC Ādi 9.36

ekalā mālākāra āmi kata phala khāba
nā diyā vā ei phala āra ki kariba

CC Ādi 9.37

ataeva saba phala deha’ yāre tāre
khāiyā ha-uk loka ajara amare

CC Ādi 9.39

In Mahāprabhu’s lila, Mahāprabhu has given independence to kṛpa-śakti, understand? Mahāprabhu has given independence to kṛpa-śakti - mercy potency, kṛpa-śakti. But in other incarnations, kṛpa-śakti is under iccha-śakti, not independent; she is under iccha-śakti, the will power, will, supreme will. Supreme Lord has supreme will. He is Supreme, Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, His will is supreme. Do you understand? The kṛpa-śakti is under iccha-śakti. Understand my language? The kṛpa-śakti is under iccha-śakti, under Supreme will. But Mahāprabhu incarnation, Mahāprabhu gave independence to kṛpa-śakti. kṛpa-śakti is not under iccha-śakti, understand me? Therefore it says: Mahāprabhu gave this independence, "Now you distribute this prema-phala to whomever you like. So much, so many fruits are now. ekalā mālākāra - I am only one gardener. How many can I eat? I am only one, so you distribute." Mahāprabhu gave independence to kṛpa-śakti, “You distribute to whomever you like.”

ataeva saba phala deha’ yāre tāre
khāiyā ha-uk loka ajara amare

CC Ādi 9.39

Let everybody get, let them eat prema-phala, he becomes deathless. ajara, amar - no old age, no death - ever fresh young man. Mahāprabhu is so merciful. Mahāprabhu has given independence. So one may think, this Jagadish Pandit, 'Oh, Mahāprabhu is so merciful so Mahāprabhu will make all arrangements for my enjoyment now. Yes, Mahāprabhu will make all arrangement for my enjoyment." If you cherish this desire, this is bhoga-buddhi, this is the desire for material enjoyment. So hari-kathā will never enter into your ears, no. Though you may come, sit here, you are just pretending that you are hearing. Really hari-kathā is not entering into your ear because you have bhoga-buddhi, you have desire for enjoyment. Mahāprabhu is like a gardener, He will make a very nice flower garland, or bunch of flowers, phula todā “Alright, take it, take it.” If you develop this desire, then bhāgya hina - unfortunate, ill-luck, that is ill-fate, ill-destiny, bad destiny will come to you. Though you may come and sit here but you cannot here kṛṣṇa-katha. Bhāgavata-kathā will never enter into your ear, do you follow? If good fortune comes - brahmāṇḍa bhramite kona bhāgyavān jīva - If a fortunate jīva wandering, wandering in lakhs, lakhs of brahmāṇḍa in lakhs, lakhs of species, comes in contact with sādhu and surrenders unto sādhu, surrenders unto the lotus feet of sādhu then begs for his mercy with concentrated attention, crying, crying, crying for the mercy of sādhu hears and completely, all his desires, material desires, desire for material enjoyment, desire for material liberation, are completely destroyed, if fortunately. Then he will hear kṛṣṇa-katha. Kṛṣṇa-katha will enter into his ears. Otherwise cannot enter, do you understand? That happened. That happened.

Brahmā knows this thing therefore Brahmā thought, 'So much materially attachment he has. Unless the attachment is finished, this fellow will never listen to me.' Do you follow? So this is karma-phala. This is karma-phala. This is the destiny, this is the result. This is destiny - karma-phala. It will never be destroyed - karmāṇi nirdahati, unless one who comes to the path of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness - pure bhakti, completely surrender by the mercy of sādhu-guru, guru-kṛṣṇa-Kṛpāte pāy, this karma-phala will never be destroyed. Only Krishna can destroy, destiny will be changed. Prabhupad says, 'Destiny will be changed if one comes to the platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Otherwise cannot be changed.' He has become, he was Indra, now he is hog. Similarly, Bharata Maharaja, emperor of the world, very pious king, gave up everything, came to the pulaha pulastya āśrama, engaged in sādhana-bhajan He made so much advancement, yes, you understand? He was very, very elevated. Still he had, in the subtle corner, attachment was there. So he become attached to doe - mṛga savaka, a doe. He forgot everything. He forgot meditating on Kṛṣṇa, always meditating on the doe, doe, doe - such attachment. So at last, when death, at the time of death, he thought of the doe and left the body then next birth is, he got a body of a deer, isn't it? He couldn't go back, back to Godhead, because he couldn't think of the Lord at the time of death. This is attachment. He did such activity, this is karma-phala. His destiny is the karmic reaction - result of his activity. Such an elevated personality Bharata Mahārāja. In Mahābharat, there is one is there, that is Nahuṣa. Nahuṣa is a very famous king, a famous king of Soma dynasty - soma-vaṁśa. He is the son of Ayu, King Ayu. He was a very pious king. He has performed many pious activities, he is a very powerful king. He was so powerful even demigods were inviting him to heavenly planet when there was attack from the demons, you understand, demons were attacking the demigods there. So demigods were inviting Nahuṣa to give them protection. Yes, such a king. So he had done so much pious activities, as a result of his pious activities, he was elevated to heavenly planet and became Indra. He became Indra. Nahuṣa became Indra. He was king here then he became Indra. When he became Indra, he became very puffed up, proud. So he engaged the brāhmaṇas in carrying his palanqueen, as King Raghugana engaged Jada Bharat, a great brāhmaṇa. Similarly, Nahusa engaged the brahmanas in carrying his palanquin. Once he engaged Agastya Muni to carry his palanqueen. Agastya Muni is a famous brāhmaṇa, and by chance, his leg touched the body of Agastya Muni. Agastya Muni got angry and cursed, "Hey rascal! What are you doing? You are so puffed up? Becoming Indra and doing this?" So he cursed him: "sarpa bhava! - Become a serpent!" So he became a serpent, snake. He was king of Heaven, Indra, now serpent. This is karma-phala - destiny, do you follow? This is destiny - karma-phala.

yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra
loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ

Bg 3.9

Gītā says: if your karma - activity, is not done for the satisfaction of Yajña puruṣa - Bhagavān Viṣṇu or Kṛṣṇa, there must be karma-phala - bondage of karma, reaction of karma, isn't it? That is karma-phala. That is destiny. That is destiny. That is there in Mahābhārat. Another episode is also there in Mahābhārat. One Vedic pandit was there. He had studied Veda, acquired Vedic knowledge but he had no bhakti; only Vedic knowledge he had acquired and scholarship he had. Once he was going on the road and some of his friends were also there, other brahmin friends were there with him. They were going, he saw very nice palatable food laying on the road, very nice palao, rasgula, jelabi, laddu, very nice, palatable… And brāhmaṇas generally are very greedy, "Oh, very nice food is aying on the road!?" But a ghost worshipper, those who worship ghost, they prepare nice food and offer to ghost. A ghost worshipper had offered that food to ghost. So he ate it. That brahmin ate it and also gave that food to his friends, "Alright you eat", all of them ate. So after a few years, they all died. So they were all brought to the abode of Yamaraj. Because Yamaraj will take decision, what will be next birth, do you understand? In Yamaraj's court. So in Yamaraj's court, Citragupta opened there a book. Citragupta is keeping book for every individual human being - what is he doing? Good work, bad work, everyone, yes, everything. Then Citragupta opened and said, 'for them, this, this, they have done this thing.' So Yamaraj gave this decision: "you will remain in the species of ghost. This is your karma-phala. Remain in the species of ghost." Ghost means no gross body, only subtle body. To remain in subtle body is very, very painful, very, very painful, yes, very, very painful. Therefore ghosts always want to enter into some gross body. Entering into a gross body, they will get some relief. Otherwise it is very painful. Yamaraj said, "you will remain in ghost body, ghost species." Then their leader, that Vedavit brāhmaṇa said, "Why? Why will be like that?" "Then, you have done this thing. You are a brāhmaṇa but you have not performed brahminical activity. You ate the food offered to ghost. So, this is karma-phala. You have to do, you have to reap it. Nobody can change it. You have to remain. You have to remain in the species of ghost. You have to remain; nobody can change it." Then they paid obeisances at the lotus feet of Yamaraj, asked, "How can we be delivered from this bondage? Please tell us the means how we will be delivered?" Yamaraj said, "you will definitely remain in the species of ghost and you will remain in a deserted place, deserted place - maru-vañcha. If by chance a Vaiṣṇava goes there, he must be very, very thirsty and hungry. If you serve him, get his blessings, then you may be delivered. Otherwise not delivered. That Dharmaraj, Yamaraj said. So they remained in ghost species hundreds, hundreds of years in a deserted place. By chance, a Vaiṣṇava went there. Vaiṣṇavas travel throughout the world, throughout the world they travel to preach the science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, you understand because they are very, very merciful. Their heart bleeds seeing the suffering, of the jīvas. Their heart bleeds. Because out of the ignorance they have been suffering, 'let me go there, impart this Kṛṣṇa consciousness, inculcate Kṛṣṇa consciousness onto them and they will be delivered, their suffering will be mitigated forever, go back home, back home.' They are so merciful so they go everywhere, throughout the world. So they also go to deserted places sometimes. So by chance, a Vaiṣṇava came to that deserted place where these brāhmaṇas were in ghost species. They couldn't see, 'oh yes, Vaiṣṇava, tilak is there, sikhā, shaved head, chanting 'Hare Kṛṣṇa.' By the attire, garments, one can see Vaiṣṇava, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Immediately they remembered what Yamarāja, Dharmarāja had said. Deserted place means scorching heat of the sun overhead, scorching heat of the sun, underneath sand is there, very hot, blisters coming out in the feet, sores; thirsty, no water, no tree, no shady tree. So the Vaiṣṇava was thirsty and hungry; scorching heat, blisters coming out, sores. So when they saw, 'yes, Vaiṣṇava has come, Yamaraja has said', so one of them, some of them took the form of the trees. 'Oh very nice tree is here.' Vaiṣṇava sat down under the shade, cooling shade of the tree and that leader, leader of that ghost party, that brahmin, Vedavit brahmin, he took the form of a brahmin, human being, came there and asked: "how can we serve you? Vaiṣṇava said: "I am very thirsty, hungry." So immediately he went, brought a glass of cold water and some fruits. Yes, ghost do very nice work. If you can engage them, yes, they will do very nice work. Some bhūta sādhakas are there. Yes, I know one sādhaka is still here, yes, Bābā, we say Fakhi Baba, he is bhūta sādhaka. Yes, he uses the ghosts to do work. Yes, do you follow? So, the Vaiṣṇava immediately offered these fruits to Bhagavān Viṣṇu, make prasad, so he eat, then his remnants he gave them. But the ghost are asariri, there is no gross body, they have subtle body, they cannot eat like this. They only smell, ghost smell. Then they smelled, immediately they got very nice demigods body - divya deva tanu. They were delivered from ghost species and they got very nice demigods body. Then they came, paid obeisances at the lotus feet of that Vaiṣṇava. The Vaiṣṇava became amazed. Then he asked;" what has happened to you?" Then they related the whole story. Do you understand? This is story. So this is karma-phala, this is destiny. According to one's karma-phala - destiny, one may be elevated to svarga or may go down to narka. If someone is fortunate to get sādhu-kṛpa, Vaiṣṇava-kṛpa thereby gets Kṛṣṇa-kṛpa, karmāṇi nirdahati kintu then his karma-phala will be destroyed. He will get mukti. Otherwise karma-phala cannot be destroyed. No other means is there.

This bhakti is very powerful, bhakti is very powerful. karma, jñana, yoga, is not so powerful. Bhakti is powerful. Therefore Caitanya-caritamṛta says:

CC madhya 24.92-93

One is who buddhimān, one who is intelligent, he accepts the bhakti patha, he accepts the path of bhakti. He gives up the path of karma, jñāna, yoga. anya sādhanā - karma-sādhanā or jñana-sādhanā or yoga-sādhanā cannot give you the perfection. They are like anya sādhanā - ajā-gala-stana-nyāya anya sādhana - This karma-sādhanā or jñana-sādhanā or yoga-sādhanā, they are like ajā-gala-stana. ajā means goat. Two nipples hanging on the neck of a goat, ajā-gala-stana. It looks like udder but no milk will come out. - ajā-gala-stana-nyāya anya sādhana - fruitless. Bhakti is very powerful - svatantra prabala saba phala deya bhakti svatantra prabala Bhakti is very powerful.

One who is buddhimān, one who is really intelligent, wise, he will adopt this bhakti process, giving up other process of karma, jñana, yoga, do you follow me? Because when one comes to, here Prabhupad says, 'if one comes to the platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness, platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness then his destiny will be changed.'

"Giving up all varieties of dharma, just surrender unto Me."

ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo

Bg 18.66

Krishna says: "Abandoning all varieties of dharma, just surrender unto Me." If someone may think, 'Oh, if I give up all dharma, then I will become adhārmika - irreligious, then I will commit pāp.' But Krishna assures you, "Don't fear - mā śucaḥ means don't fear. I will destroy all sinful reactions." Only Kṛṣṇa can destroy. If you come to the path of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness, pure bhakti, Kṛṣṇa can destroy, only Kṛṣṇa can change the destiny. Otherwise nobody can change - karma-phala is so strong. Therefore Prabhupād says: 'destiny is extremely strong, it can not be changed. But, one can change the destiny if one can comes to the platform of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.' Do you follow, yes, it will change. According to your karma it is all written, it is all written. It is all settled up, it is all written. This sukha, duḥkha - happiness and distress must come to you. You have done some good work, some bad work, some pious activities, some sinful activities. For pious activities some happiness will come, sinful activities, distress will come. It is all written in your destiny, do you follow? It will come. Nobody can change it, only if you completely surrender, only Krishna can change. Otherwise destiny cannot be changed. One such story is there, that one person was there, very bad fortune, bad stars, planets are there. Sani mahādaśa, Rāhu antardaśa, bad planet, very bad planet evil planet this Sani set up, and Rāhu. Sani and Saturn, both have come. So, suffering, suffering, suffering, he was going to die, going to die. He went to the astrologer, showed his horoscope chart, "please see what is that." Astrologer calculated, 'oh yes, very bad Sani, Saturn, and Rāhu, two evil planets have come. You cannot survive, you will die - maraṇa daṣa, death, must die." "How can I have saved from it?" "Who can change it?" "Nobody can change. It is written. Strong destiny, cannot be changed." Only Krishna can change. It is up to Krishna. Nobody else can do it, do you follow? So he became so disappointed, 'oh, I will die, alright, only Krishna can change it, if I completely surrender unto Krishna, only Krishna can.'

Only Krishna can change, nobody can change, destiny cannot be changed. So he came to Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Gosvāmī Prabhupād Mahārāja. That story is a true story. He surrendered unto Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvāmī Mahārāja "Mahārāja, please protect me. This is bad destiny I have. Astrologer says I will die. Two very powerful, evil planets, Sani: Saturn and Rahu are there, I will die." So he took shelter of Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Gosvāmī, Vaiṣṇava. Vaiṣṇava sādhu said, "Alright, only Krishna can change it, nobody can change it. You surrender unto Krishna.

Completely surrender. Become Krishna das now. Now become Krishna dās. Engage in Krishna's loving service." So he became disciple of Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Gosvāmī, and engaged under his guidance, engaged in the loving service unto Krishna. He didn't die. Death didn't come to him. He survived. If you see his horoscope, he is dead, but how he is surviving? How it happened? His horoscope, chart, said, he is dead. But he survived, you see. This, only Krishna can change. He survived. He became a great sādhu, mahātmā, yes, a great sādhu-mahātmā. He is a Gaudiya Vaiṣṇava. He is Smaraṇa Maharaja. Smaraṇa Maharaja, disciple of Bhakti Siddhanta. Yes, such many instances. Only Krishna can change, nobody can. One who is completely surrendered, there is no necessity of going to astrologer to see what happens to him. Why? Because all is gone, finished, prarabdha-karma If you are achieve the nāmābhāsa stage, your prarabdha-karma is destroyed, no more. Nambhāsa. If you achieve nāmābhāsa stage, your prārabdha-karma is destroyed. It is destroyed, so why go, why go to astrologer? 'To see my horoscope, my chart.' No need. A completely surrendered soul never goes. He is completely dependent on Krishna.

Krishna's will is powerful will. He can do and undo things. That is, that destiny, that 'death will come, I will die' - only Krishna can change it. Nobody can change it. Otherwise nobody can change it. So completely surrender unto Krishna. It is up to Krishna. - rakhe hari mare ke, mare hari rakhe ke - If Krishna wants to kill, is there anybody to protect you? If Krishna wants to protect, is there anybody to kill you? Do you understand? - rakhe hari mare ke, mare hari rakhe ke - If Krishna wants to protect, nobody can kill you. Death will never come to you, do you follow? Death will never come to you, Yamaraj will never come to you. Yamaraj is the Superintendent of death, he comes as death. mṛtyu sarva-haraś cāham - If you are completely surrender unto Krishna, He can change your destiny. Death will never come to you. It is mentioned in śāstra.

You have that? See Bhāgavatam, 6th canto. Bhāgavatam, see this verse. Śukadeva Gosvāmī says to Pariksit Mahārāja, 6.1.19.

sakṛn manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padāravindayor

na te yamaṁ pāśa-bhṛtaś ca tad-bhaṭān

ŚB 6.1.19

You found, read translation.

Although not having fully realized Kṛṣṇa, persons who have even once surrendered completely unto His lotus feet and who have become attracted to His name, form, qualities and pastimes are completely freed of all sinful reactions, for they have thus accepted the true method of atonement. Even in dreams, such surrendered souls do not see Yamarāja or his order carriers, who are equipped with ropes to bind the sinful.

So, in the dream even this Yamarāja will never come. Do you understand?

na te yamaṁ pāśa-bhṛtaś ca tad-bhaṭān
svapne ’pi paśyanti hi cīrṇa-niṣkṛtāḥ

ŚB 6.1.19

Yamarāja will never come to you, death will never come to you, do you understand? It is completely

Where is karma-phala? Where is your destiny? Finished. It is all changed. Krishna can do and undo things, only He can change. Otherwise destiny is very strong, cannot be changed. You have to reap, understand? One who is buddhimān, one who is intelligent, wise, immediately he surrenders unto the lotus feet of Krishna.

No question of destiny at all, finished. Such change, Krishna can change, nobody can change. Destiny is strong, only Krishna can change. So Prabhupād has also quoted this verse, you find out 1.5.18

tasyaiva hetoḥ prayateta kovido
na labhyate yad bhramatām upary adhaḥ
tal labhyate duḥkhavad anyataḥ sukhaṁ
kālena sarvatra gabhīra-raṁhasā

ŚB 1.5.18

Find out.

Persons who are actually intelligent and philosophically inclined should endeavor only for that purposeful end which is not obtainable even by wandering from the topmost planet [Brahmaloka] down to the lowest planet [Pātāla]. As far as happiness derived from sense enjoyment is concerned, it can be obtained automatically in course of time, just as in course of time we obtain miseries even though we do not desire them.

Only an intelligent person will only endeavour for that bhakti which is not obtainable in caudha bhuvana - 14 planetary systems, whether the topmost planet or nether most planet.

tasyaiva hetoḥ prayateta kovido
na labhyate yad bhramatām upary adhaḥ
tal labhyate duḥkhavad anyataḥ sukhaṁ
kālena sarvatra gabhīra-raṁhasā

ŚB 1.5.18

That says. Prabhupād quoted that thing - "As one into put into destiny, destiny can also put into a happy situation. Destiny is extremely strong, but one can change destiny if one comes to the platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness."

- karmāṇi nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhājāṁ -

One who is intelligent and wise person, he must make endeavour how to get bhakti. Do you understand? Bhakti dhana - bhakti is the invaluable asset and is durlabha - rarely achieved. One cannot get it even by going to the topmost planet or nether planet, wandering in the 14 planetary systems. This bhakti dhana is durlabha - is rarely achieved, but one who is really intelligent and wise, he must endeavour for to get that dhana, bhakti-dhana, do you understand? And one who gets that bhakti-dhana, that means who comes to the path of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness, destiny is changed. According one's destiny one gets distress and happiness. But it will completely change when he comes to the path of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness. One who is wise and intelligent, he must endeavour for that - how to get bhakti-dhana. You follow? Bhakti is very powerful. One who comes to pure devotion, path of pure devotion, he has no desire.

CC Antya 20.29, Śikṣāṣṭaka 4

He has no desire for material enjoyment, no desire for material liberation: bhukti-mukti. Only one desire: life after life I will serve Your lotus feet oh Lord, oh Krishna, and give You all happiness, all enjoyment, all pleasure. I will never ask anything for me. Do you understand? That is bhakti, bhakta. So, for bhakta, such a bhakta, such a dear devotee, this Svarga, Brahmaloka, even the Emperorship of the whole world - yoga-siddhi is very, very insignificant. He kicks it out.

na nāka-pṛṣṭhaṁ na ca pārameṣṭhyaṁ
na sārva-bhaumaṁ na rasādhipatyam
na yoga-siddhīr apunar-bhavaṁ vā

ŚB 6.11.25

This is a complete surrendered soul, a dear devotee. SB 6.11.25, find out that verse.

na nāka-pṛṣṭhaṁ na ca pārameṣṭhyaṁ
na sārva-bhaumaṁ na rasādhipatyam
na yoga-siddhīr apunar-bhavaṁ vā
samañjasa tvā virahayya kāṅkṣe

ŚB 6.11.25

O my Lord, source of all opportunities, I do not desire to enjoy in Dhruvaloka, the heavenly planets or the planet where Lord Brahmā resides, nor do I want to be the supreme ruler of all the earthly planets or the lower planetary systems. I do not desire to be master of the powers of mystic yoga, nor do I want liberation if I have to give up Your lotus feet.

Only one desire, to get Your lotus feet.

“A pure devotee never desires to gain material opportunities by rendering transcendental loving service to the Lord. A pure devotee desires only to engage in loving service to the Lord in the constant association of the Lord and His eternal associates, as stated in the previous verse (dāsānudāso bhavitāsmi). As confirmed by Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura:

tāṅdera caraṇa sevi bhakta-sane vāsa
janame janame haya, ei abhilāṣa

To serve the Lord and the servants of His servants, in the association of devotees, is the only objective of a pure, unalloyed devotee.”

No other desire is there. You understand? So, for him, all destiny is destroyed. All karma-phala is destroyed, nothing, because he is completely under Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Who can do and undo things. Do you follow?

Such a devotee desires what?

na kāmaye nātha tad apy ahaṁ kvacin
na yatra yuṣmac-caraṇāmbujāsavaḥ
mahattamāntar-hṛdayān mukha-cyuto
vidhatsva karṇāyutam eṣa me varaḥ

ŚB 4.20.24

4.20.24. This is Pṛthu Mahārāja’s prayer.

na kāmaye nātha tad apy ahaṁ kvacin
na yatra yuṣmac-caraṇāmbujāsavaḥ
mahattamāntar-hṛdayān mukha-cyuto
vidhatsva karṇāyutam eṣa me varaḥ

ŚB 4.20.24

My dear Lord, I therefore do not wish to have the benediction of merging into Your existence, a benediction in which there is no existence of the nectarean beverage of Your lotus feet. I want the benediction of at least one million ears, for thus I may be able to hear about the glories of Your lotus feet from the mouths of Your pure devotees.

Only one benediction I want: To have millions of ears. Let me have millions of ears hear kṛṣṇa-kathā from the lips of the pure devotee." This benediction he wants, he doesn't want anything. So, such people: no desire at all.
So why karma-phala will be there, or destiny, Destiny is completely changed. Yamaraj will never come in dream even, it is said. That is hinted here.

King Saudāsa, he was cursed by his guru, Vasiṣṭha therefore he was turned into a man-eater Rākṣasa, like tiger. This is the destiny. "Being condemned by the curse of Vasiṣṭha, King Saudāsa devoured the brāhmaṇa, exactly as a tiger eats its prey. Even though the brāhmaṇa’s wife spoke so pitiably, Saudāsa was unmoved by her lamentation." Therefore even though he was well qualified he could not restrain himself from becoming a tiger-like Rākṣasa, for this was his destiny. As one into put into distress by destiny cannot be destroyed. But one can change destiny if one comes to the platform of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Bg 18.66

All destiny will change, finish; no more karmic reactions, no prarabdha-karma - finished. Even when you attain nāmābhāsa stage, your prarabdha-karma is destroyed. Yes. Do you follow?

In Mahāprabhu’s līlā, you will find this, that Śubudhi Raya. Śubudhi Raya drank some water from a Mohammedan's house. So Mohammedan, cow-killer, meat-eater, so sinful activity. "I have committed sin. Then what atonement, what sort of atonement to perform to be free from this sinful reaction?" He went to the pandits of Kashi. In Kashi these pandits are there. He said, "this sinful activity I have committed, what atonement?" The pandits turned over the pages of their sastra, they said, "Oh, you have to eat very hot ghee. This is the atonement for this sinful activity then you will free from the reaction of the sin." Very hot ghee. He thought, 'If I drink the hot ghee I will die, I will die. I won't." So he didn't do it. He waited. When Mahāprabhu came, he went to Mahāprabhu and asked, "Mahāprabhu, I have done this thing. I went to the pandits of Kashi, they told me to drink very hot ghee. This is the atonement." Mahāprabhu said, "No, this is not proper atonement. This is karma-prāyaścitta. Therefore, three type of prāyaścittas are there.

So these materialistic persons, they go to the pandits. They have committed some sinful activities, bad planets have come, Saturn and Rāhu, they will die. They go to the pandits. "Oh Pandit Mahāśaya, what shall I do? Bad planet, evil planet has come." "Alright, you offer pūjā to that planet - Sani-pūjā, Rāhu-pūjā," isn't it? As this pandit said, "Alright, you have to drink very hot ghee." But Mahāprabhu said "No. This is not real atonement. karma-prāyaścitta. This is known as karma-prāyaścitta. Three types of prayascitas are there for atonement - karma-prāyaścitta, jñāna-prāyaścitta, bhakti-prāyaścitta. This is karma-prāyaścitta. You have done one karma, result is this - karmic reaction. To be free from this, another karma you have to do. This atonement, karma-prāyaścitta - that is not real. That is like, this is like kuñjara-śaucavat. That means this is like the bathing of an elephant. Elephant, he has dirty body so he enters into a river or lake to bath. As soon as he comes out from the lake, river, again he puts dirt on its body. What is the value of his bathing? kuñjara-śaucavat - karma-prāyaścitta is like that. For a short time, it may leave you - the reaction of this pāpa, do you follow? Sinful reaction may leave you for a very short time. But again you will commit pāp, again, like the elephant again puts dirt on its body. That is not real atonement. Then something better prayascitta is jñāna-prāyaścitta. That means one who does jñāna-prāyaścitta, he becomes very much repentant. "I will never do any sinful activity again." He becomes repentant, very very repentant. “Never do, I will never do.” But, still, that’s not… example is vaṁśanala. Thereby, the sinful reactions, he will never commit any sinful activity therefore there will be no sinful reaction. But the seed, the root is not destroyed. Example is that a very dense jungle, dense jungle of bamboo is there. That jungle was caught up with fire. The whole jungle was destroyed, burned up, turned into ashes. No jungle is there, it's completely finished. jñāna-prāyaścitta is like that. But the root is underneath the earth, it is not destroyed. When again there is rain, pour of rain, then again it will sprout, it will sprout. So in jñāna-prāyaścitta the root is not destroyed. The reactions may be destroyed, but the root, the root is avidyā. Avidyā is the root- ignorance. Nescience is the root of pap - sinful activity. That is not destroyed in jñāna-prāyaścitta. So that is not proper prāyaścitta, again he will commit. Bhakti-prāyaścitta is the only prāyaścitta. Mahāprabhu said. Bhakti-prāyaścitta is the only prāyaścitta. That destroys the root - avidyā. There will no sprouting at all. Mahāprabhu said, you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, completely surrender unto holy Name.

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

If you have completely surrendered unto the holy Name, you chant the holy Name, if you attain nāmābhāsa stage, all your karmic reaction, sinful reaction are destroyed, prārabdha-karma is destroyed. Yes. That is the proper prāyaścitta. Then, when you chant pure name, then you will get kṛṣṇa-prema, you will get Kṛṣṇa. You will go back home, back to Godhead, approach the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, you will be with Kṛṣṇa. That is the proper prāyaścitta - atonement. Completely surrender unto Kṛṣṇa, unto the holy Name. That is what is hinted here - your destiny is completely changed. Only Kṛṣṇa can change. Otherwise, destiny is very strong, nobody can change it.

Thank you very much.
