Translation by Śrīla Prabhupāda:
“The members of the assembly addressed the Lord: O exclusive shelter for all who are situated in troubled life, in this formidable fort of conditional existence the time element, like a snake, is always looking for an opportunity to strike. This world is full of ditches of so-called distress and happiness, and there are many ferocious animals always ready to attack. The fire of lamentation is always blazing, and the mirage of false happiness is always alluring, but one has no shelter from them. Thus foolish persons live in the cycle of birth and death, always overburdened in discharging their so-called duties, and we do not know when they will accept the shelter of Your lotus feet.”
Purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda:
“Persons who are not in Kṛṣṇa consciousness are living a very precarious life, as described in this verse, but all these circumstantial conditions are due to forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all these bewildered and distressed persons; therefore it is the greatest relief work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers, for they follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, who is the greatest friend to all living entities.”
This verse speaks of this material world, conditional existence, how it is full of miseries. Those who are forgetful of Krishna, devoid of Krishna consciousness, they have been suffering here. They have been suffering here from time immemorial. So here, in purport Srila Prabhupada says, 'it's due to forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa.'
“The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all these bewildered and distressed persons; therefore it is the greatest relief work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers, for they follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, who is the greatest friend to all living entities.”
In this material world, those who have forgotten Krishna, those who are devoid of Krishna consciousness, those who know this, only this body; many are there, they are engaged also in doing some good to this body, isn't it? They say, 'this is para-upakāra, 'this is doing good', isn't it? 'That is mercy also', they say, 'we show mercy'. If we analyze this, we can find there are three kinds of mercy, three types of mercy: mercy shown to this gross body: sthūla-śarīra. It is known generally as sat-karma or puṇya-karma, pious activity. One person who is hungry or persons who are hungry, starving, cannot get food so some persons are there, some organisations are also there, they feed the hungry, yes, isn't it? They say 'humanitarian work, doing good, showing mercy', yes. And birth, death, old age, disease, these miseries are here so all are diseased persons, everybody has disease, you understand, so persons, those who have disease, some acute disease, chronic disease, poor men cannot spend money for his treatment. So some persons are there, they show mercy to that suffering or diseased person, make arrangements for free treatment. They open some hospitals, do you understand, where free treatment will be given. So they show mercy. That's also mercy. They give medicine, they make arrangements. Mother Theresa got Nobel Award for this, isn't it? Serving these patients, especially leprosy affected patients. In the material world, it is considered the very, very great work, noble work, yes. So it is mercy, you understand? She was awarded Nobel Price. And one may be thirsty, so give him water to quench his thirst. That is also mercy. A poor man who cannot afford, warm clothing's during this winter season, he's suffering out of severe cold, so provide them, give them some warm clothing's, do you understand? That's also mercy. It's going on, para-upakāra, doing good, yes. And what type of good it is? Mercy shown to this body, gross body. Some are there, they open the educational institutions to impart education, free education. No fee will be demanded, free education, you understand? That is also mercy, you follow? And that is mercy to whom? What type of mercy? Mercy shown to the mind, to mind, manasa manti, vidyā-dāna to make arrangement, free education. This is also mercy. But mercy shown to the soul, ātmā, that means, here Prabhupada says:
'The Krishna consciousness movement.' Why, why the jivas suffer? Because of this forgetfulness of Krishna. 'The Krishna consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all these bewildered and distressed persons therefore it is greatest relief work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers.'
Who inculcates Krishna consciousness, who preaches this science of Krishna consciousness, what mercy he is showing? What good he is doing? What good he is doing? You understand? What good he is doing? He is doing the real good, real welfare activity. As a result, if someone will develop Krishna consciousness, he will go back home, back to Godhead. He will never again come down to this material world, never accept another material body! Material body means there is birth, death, old age and disease, the affliction of three tapas: ādhyātmika, ādi-daivika, ādibhautika? As long as one who has not developed Krishna consciousness, especially complete Krishna consciousness, he cannot be delivered from this bodily bondage or material bondage, you understand?
prītir na yāvan mayi vāsudeve
na mucyate deha-yogena tāvat
ŚB 5.5.6
5th canto Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam(5.5.6) says,
prītir na yāvan mayi vāsudeve
na mucyate deha-yogena tāvat
ŚB 5.5.6
"As long as you have not developed priti, prema to Vāsudeva Krishna, you cannot be delivered from this bodily bondage, material bondage."
So, people of, here Prabhupada Mahārāja says:
“The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all these bewildered and distressed persons; therefore it is the greatest relief work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers, for they follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, who is the greatest friend to all living entities.”
He is greatest, suhṛdaṁ sarva-bhūtānāṁ. Caitanya is Krishna. Bhagavān Krishna says that thing in Bhagavad-gītā, suhṛdaṁ sarva-bhūtānāṁ, He is the only well-wishing friend of all living entities. And that Krishna came as Caitanya Mahāprabhu to preach, who is prema-puruṣottama, who gives kṛṣṇa-prema, who gives kṛṣṇa-prema indiscriminately, never discriminates.
uttama adhama, kichu nā bāchila,
yāciyā dileka kola
kahe premānande, emana gaurāńge,
antare dhariyā dola
(Emona Sacira Nandana Vine, Premānanda Dās Ṭhākura)
He never discriminates whether one is very elevated or most degraded. Without discrimination, He gives Kṛṣṇa-prema, do you understand? Because that is needed. That is needed, that is supreme, paramārtha, parama-puruṣārtha, fifth puruṣārtha, parama-puruṣārtha or fifth puruṣārtha. Especially this rarely achieved human birth is meant for that.
labdhvā su-durlabham idaṁ bahu-sambhavānte
mānuṣyam artha-dam anityam apīha dhīraḥ
ŚB 11.9.29
11th Canto Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam says (11.9.29) labdhvā su-durlabham idaṁ bahu-sambhavānte "After undergoing lacks, lacks, lacks of species other than human species, one gets this rarely achieved birth, human birth, and temporarily given."
labdhvā su-durlabham idaṁ bahu-sambhavānte
mānuṣyam artha-dam anityam
ŚB 11.9.29
Anitya, this is anitya, for a temporary period you have been given this rarely achieved birth, human birth. But it is meant for paramārthada, attainment of supreme artha. Above the four purusārthas: dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa, these are four purusārthas.
Above these four purusārthas, fifth purusārtha is kṛṣṇa-prema-bhakti. That is paramārtha, that is pañcama purusārtha, fifth purusārtha. This, especially this rarely achieved human birth is meant for that. Mahāprabhu gives that prema. Mahāprabhu gives that prema. Mahāprabhu is well-wishing, greatest well-wisher, follow in the footsteps of Caitanya Mahāprabhu who is the greatest friend to all living entities. Do you follow? So this movement, this Krishna consciousness movement is Mahāprabhu’s movement. This is Mahāprabhu’s movement and the members of this movement, society, they follow in the footsteps of Mahāprabhu.
They develop complete Krishna consciousness. They get the mercy, they take shelter at the lotus feet of Mahaprabhu and they get, Mahāprabhu is giving kṛṣṇa-prema through chanting this holy Name -
mukhya pate jīva pāya kṛṣṇa-prema dhana.
The chief result of chanting this Holy Name,
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare
The chief result or if your chanting is offenceless, niraparādhe nāma laile pāya prema-dhana (Cc Antya 4.71). If your chanting is offenceless then you get kṛṣṇa-prema. Mahāprabhu is indiscriminately giving. Therefore we should follow in the footsteps and pray for the mercy of Mahāprabhu. Dear devotees of Mahāprabhu, gaura-prīya-janas, ācāryas are there, they have sung nice songs, begging for the mercy of Mahāprabhu, you understand. We sing these songs, songs sung by ācāryas, mahājanas. If you sing, offer prayer, so Lord will be very much pleased.
Don't compose your own song. You are a conditioned soul, you have four defects, you are full of defects. Follow in the footsteps of mahājanas,
mahājano yena gataḥ sa panthāḥ
Cc madhya 17.186
follow in the footsteps of mahājanas, sādhu-mahājanas. They have already shown us the path. Our only business is that to follow in the footprints of mahājanas.
Narottama das Ṭhākura is a mahājana, gaura-prīya-jana, dear devotee of Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu, he has sung many songs, nice songs, very nice songs. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura also, they have sung very nice songs, the mahājanas. We repeat, we should repeat that.

This is a song by Narottama Dās Ṭhākura (Prarthana), he says:
are bhāi! bhaja mora gaurāńga caraṇa
'O my brothers! Please chant, please sing the glories of Gaurāṅga, sing the glories of the lotus feet of Gaurāṅga.'
nā bhajiyā moinu dukhe ḍubi gṛha viṣa kūpe,

'We have been suffering because we are not doing this bhajana, bhajana of gaurāṅga-carana, the lotus feet of Gaurāṅga. We are drown here, we have been drown here, in this dreadful ocean of material existence, especially this gṛhāndha-kūpa, this gṛha, this home, household, household life is like a deep dark well, deep dark well. I am fallen there and I have drowned there so my heart is always afflicted with three tapas, three types of heat, that is ādyātmika, ādidaivika, ādibhautika
tāpa tray viṣānale, ahar-niśi hiyā jvale,

'Sometimes I feel as if I am unconscious, my body becomes unconscious.'
ripu vaśa indriya hoilo, gorā pada pāsarilo,

'There are ripus, enemies. There are enemies. This verse also says here, 'like a snake. The conditioned existence, the time element like a snake is always looking for an opportunity to strike. This world is full of ditches of so-called distress and happiness, there are many ferocious animals always ready to attack.'
Yes, always ready to attack. In this, bhava-sāgara, this materialistic existence is compared to a dreadful ocean, materialistic existence. In the ocean, many ferocious animals. In the ocean you'll find many ferocious sharks are there, crocodiles are there, whales are there, and timiṅgilas; timi, whales, timiṅgila, they are bigger ferocious animals than timis. Timi is a very big, great animal, huge animal, but more than that is timiṅgila, who devours timi also, devourer of whale. Such are there in, what you say, sāgara, ocean. And this bhava-sāgara, this is bhava-sāgara, this material existence, material world, is an ocean, dreadful ocean of materialistic existence. There are such ferocious animals. This verse says, ferocious animals always ready to attack. What are these ferocious animals?
- kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya - lust, greed, anger, kãma, krodha, lobha, moha, delusion, mātsarya, enviousness. kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya, pride, arrogance. These are enemies, ripu, do you understand? They are all, they are all filled in this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence. Your so-called, what you say, kith and kin, in household life, family members, Bhāgavatam says, what it says? svajanākhya-dasyu (SB 8.22.9) svajanākhya-dasyu, they are plunderers, they are plunderers, they are plundering you. But they go by the name of svajana, 'kith and kin', isn't it? svajanakhya-dasyu, yes, they are dasyu, plunderers, but they go by the name 'kith and kin', yes. It is said in the Vedic literature that Agastya Muni was there and he drank only one handful of water, do you understand, from this unlimited ocean there, sat-samudra, seven great oceans, mahā-sāgara. He drank only one handful of water and made the whole ocean dry up. What is that? What do you mean by that?
Only drinking one handful of water, he made the all seven great oceans dry up? What is that? What tattva is behind it? And what is the instruction there? You are in this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence, so many ferocious animals are there, every moment they are ready to attack and you are also attacked, suffering, suffering, suffering from time immemorial. So dry up this ocean! As Agastya Muni dried up, so you dry up! If the ocean is dried up, ocean will be dried up, then all ferocious aquatic animals will die. Isn't it? They cannot survive, they will die then you will be free from their attack. What is tattva behind it? By drinking only one handful of water, he dried up the seven oceans? I say, this bhava-sāgara, this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence, six types of enemies are there: kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya. They are like sharks, crocodiles, whales, devourers of whales, like that. So, how can one dry up this dreadful ocean?
sādhu-saṅge kṛṣṇa-nāma — ei mātra chāi
saṁsāra jinite āra kona vastu nāi
(Sri prema-vivarta, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita)
To have sādhu-saṅga, and hear kṛṣṇa-kathā and chant the holy Name of the Lord in the association of sādhu.
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare
If you do that thereby, you can, you will be able to dry up this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence. You'll be able to dry up this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence, that is by drinking one handful of water Agastya Muni dried up seven oceans. That is sādhu-saṅga. By sādhu-saṅga, what benifit is there? What you will get?
sādhu-saṅga hoya kṛṣṇa-kathā ālāpana
sādhu-saṅga hoya kṛṣṇa-kathā ālāpana
Only kṛṣṇa-kathā is there in sādhu-saṅga, no other kathā known as rājanītī-katha, political topics, topics related to sense gratification or anything else. That means by sādhu-saṅga you will develop Krishna consciousness. Do you follow? If you do sādhu-saṅga with a completely Krishna conscious person, thereby you will develop Krishna consciousness. You can understand who are you, what is your real identity. Who are you? Everybody knows, 'I am this body', isn't it? The body is the self, not beyond body, you don't know anything beyond body. In the bodily platform, bodily conception of life therefore devoid of Krishna consciousness, that is why he has been suffering. It is due to forgetfulness of Krishna. If you do sādhu-saṅga, sadhu means completely Krishna conscious, understand, who has developed prema-bhakti, who has achieved this supreme puruṣārtha, fifth puruṣārtha, gotten Krishna, do you understand, he knows. And if you associate with such sādhu, or sādhus, you will develop Krishna consciousness, you can understand who am I, what is your real identification? Mahāprabhu said: jīvera svarūpa hoya kṛṣṇera nitya dāsa; Mahāprabhu said, jīvera svarūpa hoya kṛṣṇera nitya dāsa, this is our real identification: you are eternal servant of Krishna. But the conditioned souls here in the material world, do they know it? Do they know? They don't know, they don't know. You understand? If you ask, 'who are you?' What will they say? What will they say? I am this body.
They will say: 'I am this and this. I am American, born here in California or San Diego. My name is this and that, my father is this and that.' Isn't it? He will say this thing, isn't it? Material, material identification, do you follow, but not real identification - I am soul, spirit soul, I am eternal servant of Krishna.' He cannot say. Do you follow? Or he might say, ‘I am King, rājā or prajā, citizen. I am poor or I am wealthy person, dhanī, duḥkhī, I am distressed, happy. I am black or white, I am American, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, African.’ He might say this, isn't it? This is all bodily. But what is real identification? jīvera svarūpa hoya kṛṣṇera nitya dāsa, The real svarūpa of jīva is eternal servant of Krishna. By association of sadhu you can understand 'who am I'.
sādhu-saṅga nija-tattva avagata hana nija-tattva jani āra saṁsāra na cāya
kena vā bhajinu māyā kare hay haya
kende bole, ohe kṛṣṇa, āmi taba dāsa tomāra caraṇa chādi haila sarva-nāśa
(Sri prema-vivarta, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita)
If you come for sādhu-saṅga and hear from sādhu then you can understand who are you. 'O! ami kṛṣṇa dās, then you can understand that 'I am eternal servant of Krishna'. But have you become Krishna das? Have you become Krishna das? No! You have not become Krishna dās. What das you are? Maya das? You are Maya das. Then you understand, 'Oh! I am Krishna das! But I have not become Krishna das. So many lacks, and lacks of lives I have already spend becoming Maya das, Maya das,' isn't it?
sādhu-saṅga nija-tattva avagata hana nija-tattva jani āra saṁsāra na cāya
kena vā bhajinu māyā kare hay haya
When he knows his own tattva so he develops detachment for this material world, 'Oh! Why I have been serving Maya for so many lacks of lives? Alas! Alas! Alas! Why have I become Maya das? I have not yet become Krishna das!' Then he says, 'Alas, alas! Hay, hay! Why have I been serving maya getting so many lashes from maya and have been suffering'. Then he says. Otherwise, he cannot say,
kena vā bhajinu māyā kare hay haya
Then you will cry begore Krishna.
ayi nanda-tanuja kiṅkaraṁ
patitaṁ māṁ viṣame bhavāmbudhau
kṛpayā tava pāda-paṅkaja-
sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaṁ vicintaya
(Cc. Antya 20.32, Śikṣāṣṭaka 5)
Then you will say that thing; you will cry, coming to Krishna:
ayi nanda-tanuja kiṅkaraṁ
patitaṁ māṁ viṣame bhavāmbudhau
kṛpayā tava pāda-paṅkaja-
sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaṁ vicintaya
(Cc. Antya 20.32, Śikṣāṣṭaka 5)
"O nanda-tanuja, son of Nanda Mahāraja! I am Your kinkara, I am Your servant but somehow I am fallen here in this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence and I have been drowning, drowning, drowning from time immemorial. Please accept me as a speck of dust at Your lotus feet. Let Your servant serve You."
Then you will cry and say. Hearing from sādhu, doing sādhu-saṅga, hearing from sādhu, when you can understand your own svarūpa then you can develop detachment from this material world and say: 'Alas! Alas! Why I have been serving māyā for so many lacks of lives? Then you will come to Krishna and cry. 'O Krishna! I am Your eternal servant but l have forgotten You. Therefore I have been suffering here. Now I understand, please accept me as a speck of dust at Your lotus feet. Let Your servant serve You.' Do you understand? That is the purport of this chanting 'Hare Krishna'.
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare
'O Hare! O Krishna! O Rāma! Please, I am Your servant, please make me Your servant, please allow me to serve Your lotus feet. Let Your eternal servant serve You'. This is crying of the soul, ātmāra krandana. The chanting 'Hare Krishna' is the crying of the soul, atmãra krandana. Understand me?
Mahaprabhu is crying and chanting.
'gaurāńga' bolite habe pulaka-śarīra
'hari hari' bolite nayane ba' be nīra
'gaurāńga' bolite habe pulaka-śarīra
If you utter the Name of Gaurāṅga, your whole body will be ecstatic; the hair on your body will be erected. Why? keno? keno? bolo! Why? hari hari bolite nayane ba'be nīra. He is Lord Hari, Gaurāṅga is Lord Hari, Gaurahari but chanting the Name of Hari He sheds tear, isn’t it? Chanting the name of Hari He sheds tear. - hari hari bolite nayane ba'be nira - He is teaching, pratical teacher. Gaurāṅga Mahaprabhu is practical teacher therefore we are singing this thing. You were singing this.
ripu vasa indra hoila gaura pada pāsarila vimukha hoila helo dhana
We are captured by these six types of enemies, kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya, forgotten the lotus feet of Gaurāṅga, Gaurapāda, completely forgetful of Krishna, that is bereft of Krishna consciousness, you understand? Therefore we have been suffering. And Mahāprabhu came and by the chanting 'Hare Krishna', gives kṛṣṇa-prema, you understand, gives kṛṣṇa-prema. That is needed, supreme purusārtha. That is this rarely achieved human body, birth is meant for that. By sādhu-saṅga you can understand this thing. Therefore Mahaprabhu says, - jīvera svarūpa hoya kṛṣṇera nitya dāsa - That is the svarupa of jīva, eternal servant of Krishna. By sādhu-saṅga you can understand then you develop detachment. 'Why have I been serving maya and suffering' then you come and cry before Krishna.
kende bole, ohe kṛṣṇa, āmi taba dās
tomāra caraṇa chāḍi haila sarva-nāś
'O Krishna! I am Your dāsa but I have not taken shelter at Your lotus feet, I have not taken shelter at Your lotus feet therefore I have been suffering'.
tomāra caraṇa chāḍi haila sarva-nās
When he cries, says that thing, Krishna immediately understands: 'now he is crying for Me', you understand? Now he's crying and Mahāprabhu Himself is Krishna and Hari but He is crying, crying for Krishna, crying for Hari.
kende bole,
'hari hari' bolite nayane ba' be nīra
He sheds tears. And you have to cry for that. Unless you cry, how can you get Krishna? Those who have gotten Krishna, they have cried for Krishna. Dhruva cried, Bilvamaṅgala Thākura cried, they got. Dhruva, five year old boy, five year-old boy Dhruva, do you understand? When his stepmother insulted him, he went to his own mother Sunītī-devī, she said: 'yes, if Nārāyaṇa kṛpā will be there, you'll get that chance;' 'Where is that Nārāyaṇa? Where is that Hari? Where is that Nārāyaṇa? I must get it!' His Mother said, 'Oh! I have heard, great munis, risis, they go to forest, they do tapasyā'. 'I must go! I must go, I must go!' 'O, you mere boy! How can you?' 'No, no, no, I must go, I must get Him!' That is Dhruva: determined, determination, strong determination: 'I must do this thing.'
By hearing from a sādhu, understanding who am I? "O, I am Krishna das but I have not yet become Krishna das. Lacks of lives I have, wasted, becoming Maya das! In this very life I must become Krishna das, I must become Krishna das. I must become. Be determined. This is determination. Therefore name is Dhruva. Dhruva means, very determined person; 'I must get!' Five year-old boy!
So he cried, he cried, 'Where is that lotus-eyed Hari? Where is that kamala-locana Hari? Where is Kamala-locana Hari?' Just crying, crying, crying, he got out of the house, went to forest. Do you follow? Crying is needed. This is bhakti-yoga dhana.
This, Vṛndāvana Dās Ṭhākura has said:
bhakti-yoga, bhakti-yoga, bhakti-yoga-dhana
`bhakti’ ei-kṛṣṇa-nāma-smaraṇa-krandana
CB 2.24.72
Caitanya-bhāgavata, Vṛndāvana Dās Ṭhākura says, bhakti-yoga, bhakti-yoga, bhakti-yoga dhana. The bhakti-yoga is an
invaluable asset. What is bhakti?
`bhakti’ ei-kṛṣṇa-nāma-smaraṇa-krandana
Chanting, uttering name of Krishna, remembering name of Krishna, crying, that is bhakti. Mahāprabhu is crying, chanting the holy Name 'Hari', 'Hare Krishna', He is crying and teaching you practically: you cry, you cry, you cry! This chanting 'Hare Krishna' is the ātmār krandana, is the crying of the soul, crying of the soul, you follow? So by sādhu-saṅga you can understand, when you cry then Krishna understands,
'now he's crying how to get Me'. Then what happens?
kṛṣṇa yena cit-saktir abala māyā hoy durbala
māyāke pichane rākhi kṛṣṇa-pāne cāya
bhajite bhajite kṛṣṇa-pāda-padma pāya
(Sri prema-vivarta, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita)
When he understands this thing, that 'I am Krishna das' then he cries, he cries, cries.
māyāke pichane rākhi kṛṣṇa-pāne cāya
Then he says, 'you Maya, get out ugly witch Maya! Get out! Get out!' He kicks Maya, pushes her back, pushes her back, looks forward, looks out to Krishna, not looking back to Maya, isn't it? But maya is very powerful. "O Vaiṣṇavānanda (dās), you are getting out of my laps?" For so many lacks of lives I have given you shelter on my lap, such nice lap, thorny lap, not lap of the soft petals of roses - thorny laps, Maya's lap. Now getting out?" Maya becomes furious, Maya allures him in so many ways. Here it says. 'The fire of lamentation is always blazing and mirage of false happiness is always alluring.' Maya's allurement comes, yes, Maya's allurement comes, always alluring. In what allurement Maya appears? Very beautiful maiden form, putting on nice sari, yes, decorated with nice ornaments, lipstick, red lips, laughing, nice flower garland, nice flower garland in her hand, and tinkling sound, nupura, 'rujun, rujun', with nice flowers. You, hearing from sädhu-guru, looking at Krishna, now Maya, 'Hey!' calling you, "Vaiṣṇavānanda (dās)!" 'rujun...' Then looking back to Maya. Then Guru says, 'Hey! Look at there.' Prabhupada said, 'Look at!' Maya...But no looking back, no more, no more. If you are looking back, finished! Understand me? Your position is like that. No determination. you are not determined, not determined as Dhruva! and you have no strong faith in sādhu-guru's words. śraddha, dṛdha śraddha. You should develop strong faith, unflinching faith, not soft faith. Some faith, but not strong soft. Maya will break it. Do you follow? But,
māyāke pichane rākhi kṛṣṇa-pāne cāya
bhajite bhajite kṛṣṇa-pāda-padma pāya
(Sri prema-vivarta, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita)
Pushing back at Maya, "Get out maya from here!" Not looking back. Then he engages himself in kṛṣṇa-bhajana under the guidance of, accepting sādhu-guru, engages himself in kṛṣṇa-bhajana.
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare
Then he gets the lotus feet of Krishna. Do you follow? This is by sādhu-saṅga, he will be able, that is by drinking one handful of water, Agastya Muni dried up the seven oceans. This is sādhu-saṅga. By sādhu-saṅga you will be able to dry up this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence so nobody will strick you, nobody will attack you. They have dried, they have died. Follow me? That Mahāprabhu gives this chanting, trough chanting, kṛṣṇa-prema. When this ocean is dried up, the ferocious aquatics animals, sharks, crocodiles, whales, devorors of whales are, all six types of enemies, they have all died, then what will you get? What you will get? Bolo! What will you get? When the ocean dries up, ferocious aquatics animals die, then what you will collect? Understand?
- a treasure
Treasure, treasure, treasure that is kṛṣṇa-prema. Understand? That is kṛṣṇa-prema, unvaluable asset, dhana. That is dhana, unvaluable asset, kṛṣṇa-prema. One of the, what you say, synonyms? Prati śabdha? One of the synonyms of 'sagara', is ratna-garbha, ratnāgāra. In Sanskirt dictionary you'll find. One of the synonyms of 'sagara', ocean, is ratna-garbha or, you understand? What you say? The treasure house of ratna, unvaluable gem, or ratnāgāra. It is known as ratnākara. Do you understand? You will get that ratna. Do you follow? If you dive deep, go deep, deep, deeper, deeper, deeper most region of this ocean then you can collect invaluable gem.
Some divers are there, they dive very deep, deeper most region to collect muktā, muktā uttaraṇa, Ivory Coast is there, pearls, isn't it? They dive, divers, they go very deep and collect. If you cannot dive, deeper, deeper most region, you are just floating at the surface of the water. What you will collect? You will collect fish only, you will collect fish.
Those who cannot dive in the deepermost region, deeper, deeper most, on the surface, they collect fish. What is ratnagarbha, ratnākara? The sagara, ocean, is ratnakara, is a reservoir of invaluable gems. If you can dive, go deeper most region then you can collect. If you are not a diver you cannot dive, dive deeper most, they will die! Dry up it! Dry up it, like Agasya Muni, by drinking one handful of water, he dried up. That is by sādhu-saṅga, you can dry up it. When the ocean is dried up, all aquatic animals, ferocious animals have died then you can very easily collect invaluable gem, that is kṛṣṇa-prema, understand? That invaluable gem is kṛṣṇa-prema, apūrva-ratna, kṛṣṇa-prema. So, Mahāprabhu and dear devotees of Mahaprabhu, they give this chance to you, you understand. They give this chance to you, how you can get this invaluable gem. Therefore it says,
hena gaura dayā maya chāḍi saba lāja bhaya kāya mane laha re śaraṇa
"Wonderfully merciful is Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu! Give up your fear, give up your all shyness, shame, completely, what you say, kāya, mana, vākya, body, mind and speech, completely take shelter!"
parama durmati chila tāre gora uddhārilā
tā'ra haila patita-pāvana
Most degraded, most sinful persons Jagāi and Madhāi, you understand? Mahāprabhu, patita-pavana, deliverer of the most degraded sinful persons, He is patita-pavana. Mahāprabhu's mercy is wonderful mercy. He showers His wonderful mercy on them and they become delivered, you understand, they become sādhus, you understand? He's so merciful, He's Gaurāṅga.
gora dvija-nāta-rāje bandhaha hṛdaya-mājhe
ki karibe saṁsāra-samāna
hṛdaya sphuratu vaḥ śacī-nandana
"Let that Śacīnandana Gaurahari, son of Śacīmātā Gaurahari be manifest in my heart." Keep that Gaurahari in your heart. What this dreadful ocean of material existence do to you? What Yamarāja will do to you? Nobody can do anything to one who has gotten the mercy of Gaurāṅga.
narottama dāsa kahe gora-sama keha nahe na bhajite deya prema-dhana
Narottama Dās Ṭhākura said, 'Nobody is as merciful as Gaura, Gaurāṅga. Nobody can be compared with Gaurāṅga, gora-sama keha nahe. Nobody can equal to Him, no avatara will be compared to Him, you understand? Because by the mercy of Gaura you can get prema-dhana.' Nobody gives kṛṣṇa-prema.
namo mahā-vadānyāya
kṛṣṇa-prema-pradāya te
kṛṣṇāya kṛṣṇa-caitanya-
nāmne gaura-tviṣe namaḥ
This is pranama mantra, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī offers to the most munificent incarnation, Śrī Krishna Caitanya, Gaurāṅga who gives kṛṣṇa-prema indiscriminately. Do you follow? This invaluable treasure is this Mahāprabhu's dayā. What is Mahāprabhu's dayā? The dayā, mercy, and the gaura-priya-jana, the dear devotees of Mahaprabhu, members of the Krishna consciousness movement. This is Mahāprabhu's movement. Prabhupada says:
“The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all these bewildered and distressed persons; therefore it is the greatest relief work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers.”
Yes. What humanitarian workers, what they are giving? What the others give? Somebody may be feeding the hungry person, satisfying the hunger or quenching the thirst, you understand? Maybe making so nice arrangement for free treatment to diseased person, patient like Mother Theresa or may be opening so many educational institutions to give free education. So they are doing good, showing some mercy to this body and mind. But as long as you have this material body, birth, death, old age and disease are there, isn't it? You cannot be free from it. As long as material body is there, you cannot be free from the affliction of three tapas: ādhyātmika, ādi-daivika, ādibhautika as long as the material body is there. Leaving one material body you get another, isn't it? Do you understand? Unless you develop Krishna consciousness, complete Krishna consciousness, unless you develop this, get this kṛṣṇa-prema, the supreme puruṣārtha, you understand me?
prītir na yāvan mayi vāsudeve
na mucyate deha-yogena tāvat
ŚB 5.5.6
As long as you have not developed prīti, prema to Krishna, Vāsudeva, you cannot be delivered from this bodily bondage or material bondage. That parama puruṣārtha, supreme puruṣārtha, kṛṣṇa-prema, fifth puruṣārtha is needed. And Mahāprabhu gives. One you show this mercy and one who does this good, what good he's doing? No more material body! Go back home, back to Godhead, isn't it? No more material body, no more suffering, no more birth, death, old age and disease! Go back to the kingdom of the Lord which is sac-cid-ānanda maya dhāma. Isn't it? One who does this, what to say, para-upakāra, humanitarian work, what he does? What the others do? Mahāprabhu's dayā, amanda doya dayā, amanda doya dayā. But the dayā shown by others, materialistic persons, that is dayā but consequence is manda, manda doya dayā. Understand my language? That dayā is manda doya dayā whereas Mahaprabhu's dayā is amanda doya dayā. My language you understand? No? Deaf? Are you deaf? Āre baba!
The persons who feed the hungry person, satisfy the hunger, quench the thirst, gives them warm clothing to the suffering persons those who are suffering out of bitter cold, biting cold, making arrangement, opening hospitals, hundreds, thousands of hospitals, making arrangement of free treatment, of the patients, they are showing dayā. What dayā? Temporary dayā for temporary body and mind, isn't it? But can they deliver a person from the fort of Durgā Devi? From this dreadful ocean of materialistic existence? Again, again another material body, again birth, death, old age and disease is there; again eating, sleeping, defending, mating is there, demand of the material body is there.
So? Understand me? That dayā produces what? It produces bad, evil. Again another material body means manda? Understand my language? Another material body means manda, evil, bad. So that dayā produces manda, evil. Therefore, amanda doya dayā. But Mahaprabhu's dayā - no more, no more rebirth, isn't it? One who develops complete Krishna consciousness,
In Bhagavad-gītā (4.9) Krishna says,
janma karma ca me divyam
evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ
tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma
naiti mām eti so ’rjuna
Bg 4.9
Isn't it? "One who knows Me in tattva and develops complete Krishna consciousness, understands Me in tattva", who understands who is he, who is God, Supreme Lord, what is his eternal relationship with Him, he will go back home, back to Godhead! He will never, no rebirth, never come back here, no rebirth, no material birth, no material body again. Then? If you develop complete Krishna consciousness, that Mahaprabhu gives kṛṣṇa-prema, you go back home, back to Godhead! So what dayā? There is no manda, no material existence again, no material body again, no suffering again, no hunger, thirst again, no disease again, no old age again, no death again. Then this ia amanda doya dayā. Dayā shown by Mahaprabhu or gaura-priya-jana is such dayā, that no evil will be produced, no bad will be produced, you understand? But dayā shown by others, evil is be produced. Again another material body means again suffering. Understand? So what is Mahāprabhu's dayā. Therefore it is said:
“It is the greatest relief work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers, for they follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, who is the greatest friend to all living entities.”
They preach the science of Krishna consciousness. Therefore the founder ācārya of this society, our revered spiritual master named this society 'Society for Krishna Consciousness.'It is very significant. Why Krishna Consciousness? Because Krishna Consciousness is the boon. To develop complete Krishna Consciousness is the goal of our life, you understand, rarely achieved human birth. Thereby no more suffering, no rebirth - go back home back to Godhead. That is Krishna Consciousness. So those who join here it says:
“This Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all these bewildered and distressed persons; therefore it is the greatest relief work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers, for they follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, who is the greatest friend to all living entities.”
Do you follow? What they do? What the members of Krishna Consciousness Society do? What they do? What are they doing? What are they doing? bolo! Preaching the science of Krishna Consciousness, speaking kṛṣṇa-kathā. Isn’t it? sādhu-saṅga, giving opportunity, for the distressed people, suffering people, opportunity of sādhu-saṅga, isn't it? Opportunity of sādhu-saṅga. They are giving this opportunity of sādhu-saṅga, kṛṣṇa-kathā because this kṛṣṇa-kathā,
śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ
hṛdy antaḥ stho hy abhadrāṇi
vidhunoti suhṛt satām
ŚB 1.2.17
Isn't it? How can one cleanse the heart? The dirt accumulated in your heart, do you understand? The dirt accumulated, the contamination, there, filthy things accumulated in your heart, how can it be cleansed? Is there any way, means, any material scientist has, discovered anything? They have all discovered external things, how to clean the body. But how can you clean the heart?
śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ
hṛdy antaḥ stho hy abhadrāṇi
vidhunoti suhṛt satām
ŚB 1.2.17
If you come for sādhu-saṅga, come to this society for Krishna Consciousness, that gives opportunity to one and all to hear kṛṣṇa-kathā, you understand? There are sādhus travelling throughout the world speaking kṛṣṇa-kathā, preaching the science of Krishna Consciousness, giving that opportunity for sādhu-saṅga and to hear kṛṣṇa-kathā, you understand?
sādhu-saṅge kṛṣṇa-nāma — ei mātra chāi
saṁsāra jinite āra kona vastu nāi
(Sri prema-vivarta, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita)
Only one thing needed, this is the only one, what you say, boon you must ask for, you understand? You must ask for only one boon. What is that?
bhagavat-saṅgi-saṅgasya
martyānāṁ kim utāśiṣaḥ
ŚB 1.18.13
Pracetās, do you follow Pracetās? You don't know? They, by order of their father, they went to do tapasyā, isn't it, hundreds, hundreds of years standing in the water, endured very severe austerity and tapasyā. Then Lord Viṣṇu became pleased then He appeared before them. Lord Viṣṇu said:
'Alright, ask for the boon. What boon do you want?' What boon they asked for?
tulayāma lavenāpi
na svargaṁ nāpunar-bhavam
bhagavat-saṅgi-saṅgasya
martyānāṁ kim utāśiṣaḥ
ŚB 1.18.13
They said this thing:
'O Lord,' do you understand, here the sadasas?, the assemblies, of that assembly of that Dakṣa yajña, assembly was offering prayer to Bhagavān Viṣṇu Who had appeared there, isn't it? This is their prayer. So they asked for that.
tulayāma lavenāpi
na svargaṁ nāpunar-bhavam
bhagavat-saṅgi-saṅgasya
martyānāṁ kim utāśiṣaḥ
ŚB 1.18.13
"O Lord! We are residents of this martya purā", you understand martya purā? Material world, "where there is birth and death, janma mṛtyu ache, understand me? This is martya pura. "We are the residents of this martya pura, material world where there is birth and death. What āśiṣa, what boon is there for us? Only one boon, bhagavat-saṅgi-saṅga - association with bhagavāta bhakta-vaiṣṇava-sādhu. sādhu-saṅga is the only boon, understand? tulayāma lavenāpi na svargaṁ nāpunar-bhavam, even a moment's association, a moment's association with a pure sādhu, one will derive such benefit or result, it cannot be compared, to the attainment of heavenly planets. Do you understand? na svargaṁ nāpunar-bhavam, do you follow, cannot be compared to the attainment of heavenly planet, higher planetary system or merging in the Brahman, cannot be compared. Such an attainment, benefit is there, result, fruit is there! What is that? You will develop complete Krishna Consciousness, you will come to this path of devotional service, bhakti-patha, you will be engaged in the loving service to the lotus feet of Krishna, You will, what do you say, be situated in your constitutional position, nitya kṛṣṇa dās.
Thereby, bhajite bhajite kṛṣṇa-pāda-padma pāy, then you get the lotus feet of Krishna, fixed there which is the only shelter. The lotus feet of Krishna is the only shelter, do you follow? No other shelter is there. No other shelter is there. That is the only shelter, the lotus feet of Krishna. Here it says:
‘The fire of lamentation is always blazing, and the mirage of false happiness is always alluring, but one has no shelter from them.’
Do you follow? But one who has taken shelter at the lotus feet of Krishna, beautiful lotus feet of Krishna, the fire of, this fire of lamentation cannot burn him, understand? And the mirage of false happiness cannot allure him, understand, cannot allure him. It's abhaya-caraṇāravinda. Lotus feet of Krishna is what? abhaya-caraṇāravinda - there is not fear, fearlessness.

Wherever I look I see all rejoicings, no suffering, no distress.’ How is it? How is it, bābā, no suffering, all rejoicing? One who sees the lotus feet of Krishna, beautiful lotus feet of Krishna, there is no suffering, do you understand? sac-cid-ānanda-ānandamaya, no suffering – all rejoicing, such a surrendered soul, premi bhakta.

In Bhagavad-gītā Krishna says. Why did you come to Krishna Consciousness? What is that Krishna Consciousness movement, Mahāprabhu movement? What is that? What it is giving? He says, great relief, 'They give relief to all bewildered and distressed persons. This is the greatest relief work for all human society. The members of this society therefore, they offer the greatest well-wishers, the greatest well-wishers. What they are giving? No more suffering, no distress, no anxiety. Completely surrendered to the lotus feet of Krishna, completely surrendered to the holy Name. Develop kṛṣṇa-prema then you will be able to bind Krishna in your heart.

Krishna says in Bhagavad-gītā, “One who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me, he is not out of My sight and I am not out of his sight.” This is Krishna Consciousness. Krishna is sac-cid-ānandamaya, san-maya, cin-maya, ānanda-maya. So only ānanda, blissfulness is there, no suffering, do you understand? Therefore, Śrila Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says,
āmāra duḥkha dūre gelo, cintā nā rohilo,
caudike ānanda dekhi
'All my suffering gone, distress gone, no anxiety, all anxiety gone, all directions I see all rejoicing, blissfulness only', because he sees the beautiful form of Śyāmasundara. This is completely Krishna Consciousness.

"Oh Lord, Your two lotus feet is such, is abhaya caraṇāravinda, aśoka abhaya - there is no lamentation, there is no fear, there is no death! A place of deathlessness, fearlessness, do you follow? Such abhaya caraṇāravinda, such caraṇāravinda, lotus feet of Krishna is such place. There is no fear, no lamentation, no death. No fear, no lamentation, no death, do you understand? One becomes deathless. Birth, death, old age, disease, these are sufferings here. One who takes shelter there, he's free from all this suffering. Place of deathlessness, place of fearlessness, no lamentation, aśoka-abhoya, amṛtera sthala. Who gives this? These members of Krishna Consciousness Society. It is said. 'They give great relief to all the bewildered and distress persons.
Therefore it is the greatest relief work for all human society.' Develop complete Krishna Consciousness, see Krishna everywhere, see how everything, everybody is related to Krishna -- one relationship. Then no more suffering. This is the mercy of Mahaprabhu. This is the mercy of gaura-prīya-jana, dear devotees of Gauranga Mahaprabhu.
Otherwise you cannot develop Krishna Consciousness. They move, wander, travel throughout the world and preach kṛṣṇa-kathā.

Their contribution to the world is incomparable, incomparable, incomparable. Understand me? This is Krishna Consciousness. 'Members of this Kṛṣṇa Consciousness', therefore Prabhupad says, 'This Kṛṣṇa Consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all the bewildered and distressed persons therefore it is the greatest relief work for all human society and the workers thereof are the greatest well-wishers'. What they are giving? Their contribution is incomparable, incomparable. Nobody contributes such thing. Do you understand? So?
Thank you very much.
