ŚB 8.17.17

athāpy upāyo mama devi cintyaḥ
santoṣitasya vrata-caryayā te
mamārcanaṁ nārhati gantum anyathā
śraddhānurūpaṁ phala-hetukatvāt

 


Translation by Srila Prabhupada:

Yet because I have been satisfied by the activities of your vow, O goddess Aditi, I must find some means to favor you, for worship of Me never goes in vain but certainly gives the desired result according to what one deserves.

 


ŚB 8.17.18

tvayārcitaś cāham apatya-guptaye
payo-vratenānuguṇaṁ samīḍitaḥ
svāṁśena putratvam upetya te sutān
goptāsmi mārīca-tapasy adhiṣṭhitaḥ

 


Translation by Srila Prabhupada:


You have prayed to Me and properly worshiped Me by performing the great payo-vrata ceremony for the sake of protecting your sons. Because of Kaśyapa Muni’s austerities, I shall agree to become your son and thus protect your other sons.

 


ŚB 8.17.19

upadhāva patiṁ bhadre
prajāpatim akalmaṣam
māṁ ca bhāvayatī patyāv
evaṁ rūpam avasthitam

 


Translation by Srila Prabhupada: 

Always thinking of Me as being situated within the body of your husband, Kaśyapa, go worship your husband, who has been purified by his austerity.

 


ŚB 8.17.20

naitat parasmā ākhyeyaṁ
pṛṣṭayāpi kathañcana
sarvaṁ sampadyate devi
deva-guhyaṁ susaṁvṛtam

 


Translation by Srila Prabhupada: 

O lady, even if someone inquires, you should not disclose this fact to anyone. That which is very confidential is successful if kept secret.

 


ŚB 8.17.21

śrī-śuka uvāca
etāvad uktvā bhagavāṁs
tatraivāntaradhīyata
aditir durlabhaṁ labdhvā
harer janmātmani prabhoḥ
upādhāvat patiṁ bhaktyā
parayā kṛta-kṛtyavat

 


Translation by Srila Prabhupada: 

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After speaking in this way, the Supreme Personality of Godhead disappeared from that very spot. Aditi, having received the extremely valuable benediction that the Lord would appear as her son, considered herself very successful, and with great devotion she approached her husband.

 


ŚB 8.17.22

sa vai samādhi-yogena
kaśyapas tad abudhyata
praviṣṭam ātmani harer
aṁśaṁ hy avitathekṣaṇaḥ

 


Translation By Srila Prabhupada: 

Being situated in a meditational trance, Kaśyapa Muni, whose vision is never mistaken, could see that a plenary portion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead had entered within him.

 


ŚB 8.17.23

so ’dityāṁ vīryam ādhatta
tapasā cira-sambhṛtam
samāhita-manā rājan
dāruṇy agniṁ yathānilaḥ

 


Translation by Srila Prabhupada:


O King, as the wind promotes friction between two pieces of wood and thus gives rise to fire, Kaśyapa Muni, whose transcendental position was fully absorbed in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, transferred his potency into the womb of Aditi.

Purport

A forest fire begins when two pieces of wood rub against one another, being agitated by the wind. Actually, however, fire belongs neither to the wood nor to the wind; it is always different from both. Similarly, here it is to be understood that the union of Kaśyapa Muni and Aditi was not like the sexual intercourse of ordinary human beings. The Supreme Personality of Godhead has nothing to do with the human secretions of sexual intercourse. He is always completely aloof from such material combinations.

The Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (9.29), samo ’haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu: “I am equal toward all living entities.” Nonetheless, to protect the devotees and kill the demons, who were a disturbing element, the Lord entered the womb of Aditi. Therefore this is a transcendental pastime of the Lord. This should not be misunderstood. One should not think that the Lord became the son of Aditi the way an ordinary child is born because of sexual intercourse between man and woman.

Here it may also be appropriate to explain, in these days of controversy, the origin of life. The life force of the living entity — the soul — is different from the ovum and semen of the human being. Although the conditioned soul has nothing to do with the reproductive cells of man and woman, he is placed into the proper situation because of his work (karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa). Life is not, however, a product of two secretions, but is independent of all material elements. As fully described in Bhagavad-gītā, the living entity is not subject to any material reactions. He can neither be burnt by fire, cut by sharp weapons, moistened by water, nor dried by the air. He is completely different from the physical elements, but by a superior arrangement he is put into these material elements. He is always aloof from material contact (asaṅgo hy ayaṁ puruṣaḥ) but because he is placed in a material condition, he suffers the reactions of the material modes of nature.

 


puruṣaḥ prakṛti-stho hi

bhuṅkte prakṛtijān guṇān
kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo ’sya
sad-asad-yoni-janmasu

 


“The living entity in material nature thus follows the ways of life, enjoying the three modes of nature. This is due to his association with that material nature. Thus he meets with good and evil amongst various species.” (Bg. 13.22) Although the living entity is aloof from the material elements, he is put into material conditions, and thus he must suffer the reactions of material activities.

Devotee: Sometime people they may say if you read Srila Prabhupada's books, then you associate with Srila Prabhupada. Then you have association with Srila Prabhupada.

Gour Govinda Swami: Books are there. Many books are there, do you understand? Not only Prabhupada's books. Bhaktivinoda Thakura's books are there, Goswami books are there, Rupa Goswami books are there, Jiva Goswami books are there, Sanatan Goswami books are there. Many Sadhu-Mahajana are there. They have written books. So? Can you understand by mere reading the books? Have you sufficient knowledge to understand it? That is another question. Then? Books are there in Kali-Yuga and in other ages there are no books. In other yuga's the people, human beings, are very very elevated. They have elevated, superior conciousness. Once they hear, they remember, they never forget. But you forget. You leave this place, you go there, you forget. If I ask you cannot reproduce it correctly. Out of ten, only five you may remember. Other five you have forgotten.

Kali-Yuga
, most sinful age, very degraded age. Kali means quarreling. Hypocrisy. Kali means quarreling. Hypocrisy. Dambha, pride, is the meizuring rot in Kali-Yuga. Everyone thinks himself to be very great. I'm such a [inaudible]. Don't you know who am I? Such proud. Such pride is there. This is the meizuring roth, dhamba. Do you understand? Pride is the meizuring roth. So there is quarreling. Two persons quarrel, two groups quarrel, two states quarrel, two political parties quarrel, always quarreling. [inaudible], Kali-Yuga, sinful age. [inaudible] Consciously or unconsciously everyone is engage in sinful activity. Conscious is very polluted consciousness. So how can you remember things, you forget. So books are there! Do you understand? Reading books you will revive, oh yes, I have heard this thing, I have forgotten, now i remember. These books will give you help. But you have to hear directly. From the pure lips of sadhu. That is very very potential. Very potential.

Devotee: It is not always possible to hear directly.

Gour Govinda Swami: Why? What impossibility is there?

Devotee: separation…

Gour Govinda Swami: I said, you don't know the language, I said. Some say, Gurudeva, I am far far away from you. How can I have your association? That question you were asking. The sadhu-guru is such. By mere willing, by mere willing, he can revive, that conciousness on you. Do you understand? He can revive that Krishna Consciousness in you by mere willing, if he is so merciful.

If you please sadhu-guru, by your service, by mere willing, sad-icha, by good will, his mercy is very powerful. Yes. As Krishna is Supreme Personality of Godhead, is very powerful, Supremely Powerful, Supremely He can do and undo things, do you understand? And His dear devotee, Sadhu-Guru, Mahajana, completely surrender unto the Lotus Feet of Krishna, he has bound up Krishna. With the rope of love, Krishna has become dependend on him. Like a small child who is completely dependend on his mother or father, parents, similarly Krishna, do you understand? He is bound up, with the rope of love of that sadhu-guru, he has gotten Krishna. So, what sadhu-guru wants, Krishna does it. So? No impossibility! Krishna can do and undo things. Make the possible into impossible, and the impossible into possible. So his dear devotee, when offers prayer to Krishna, Krishna immidiately grants it. Do you understand? Why do you think so? It is impossible from your part, that will be possible, you cannot think it off. How it will be possible? It becomes possible also. Yes. Now today, you are far far away, the next day, you are closer, you are near, how will it be? Don't you think so? He can do and undo things. Alright? Yes.

In case of the material body, in case of the material world, material surroundings, material mind, or the material thoughts, material deliberations, or either the material mind, how can one conceive that which is inconceivable?    

Devotee: we cannot speculate.

Gour Govinda Swami: Don't speculate. Just accept it.

Devotee: because our memory is [inaudible]. We tend to forget.

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes.

Devotee: then, what can we do, we can only speculate.

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes.

Devotee: That's a problem.

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes, that is the problem. So don't speculate. Give up your speculation. Do you understand? This is inconceivable, you cannot conceive it. Just accept it. Just accept it. Don't add any of your material logics, deliberations to it. Just think this is completely transcendental. Not material. Your material mind cannot conceive of it. It is inconceivable. Do you understand? Just accept it. Accept the authority. A simple child, accept the [inaudible]. Then one will make advancement. Calculates, material calculations are correct. Won't accept. All calculations are wrong. He cannot get promotion. He cannot reach the goal. He cannot be promoted to the higher class. So accept the authority. Bonafide authority, just accept. Follow, his instructions and do, what he says, and then you will get the result. Bass. You will get the result. Have full faith. The words of sadhu-sastra-guru. Don't have any doubt in it. 

 


Samsaya atmana vinasyati

 


If you have a tinge of doubt, you will perish. No doubt. Complete faith. Do you understand, then you will get it. You will get the result. Defenitely. If sadhu-guru is pleased with you. Pleased with you, through your service. His Kripa, mercy, is very very strong, potential, powerful. Do you understand? Kripa-bala. Do you understand? Yes.

Krishna says, I don't interfer in it, yes. The other day we were discussing that thing. I don't interfer in it. Sadhu's, vaisnavas mercy, one who has gotten, I cannot interfer, yes, so strong, so effective, so powerful. Why you have nothing? You stupid rascals.

Karma nahi, jnana nahi, Krishna-bhakti nahi. I have no karma, no jnana, no krishna-bhakti. Nothing. I don't deserve all these things. Completely dependend upon your mercy, O' Vaisnava Thakura. O Mahatma, Patita-Pavana Gaura-Hari. Complete dependend on His mercy. Karuna-kevala. Do you understand? Nothing else.

Niskapata-seva-prapti, that is another point. Sometimes we have discusses that. Niskapata-seva-prapti. There should not be duplicity. Without duplicity. Pure heart. Pure heart. Were you are really hankering, you really hankering for it. Really desirous of your heart. No duplicity. Just a simple heart. Krishna knows the heart. What is there in the heart. If it is a pure heart, simple heart, no duplicity, he gets. Immidiately he gets.

Devotee: the soul wants, but the mind is giving so many obstacles, so many. The mind is material, once it runs away, it doesn't wants to…

Gour Govinda Swami: Therefore you have to become the master of the mind, you are the master of the mind. You are not the servant of the mind. Mind is your servant, you are the master. But why you put it in the reversed way? Why have you aligned your wicked mind, dusta-mana, stupid mind, to be your master, you to be his servant? Then who will help you? Nobody can help you. But you are welcoming all these things. You are sowing that seed, so you must reap the consequence. Huh? As you will sow, as you will reap. Don't sow such seed. Do you follow me?

The mind is your servant, he is a good servant, bad master, bad master. You should understand, make a servant. He is a good servant.

Man mana bhava, then he will take you to Krishna. If you make him a bad master, he will drag you to hell. Yes.

Devotee: Guru Maharaja, you are mentioning that one should simply depend on the mercy of Guru and Krishna...

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes...

Devotee: So sometimes we don't have so much faith.

Gour Govinda Swami: That is the whole trouble with you.

Devotee: So, even if we don't have faith, but if we some way or the other accept to guru's mission.

Gour Govinda Swami: You should develop complete faith. Do you understand? Complete faith, strong faith. No tinge of doubt should be there. Bass.

That is the first requisite, that is the base. Rupa Goswami says, adau-sraddha. First is sraddha. Faith. That is foundation, then you will build one after another. Do you understand, then anartha-nivriti, nistha, one after another. Built up, built up, built up. The topmost is prema, otherwise no base, you have no base, no faith. No faith means no base, how the mansion will be built. No question at all. If you will built of it will collapse. It will collapse.

Devotee: Guru Maharaja, if we try to see everything as Krishna's mercy and work with that faith. A little bit of faith, that stronger faith will develop like that.

Gour Govinda Swami: Krishna has Supreme will, He is the ultimate sanctioning authority, He is Supreme in all respect, by his mere willing everyhting takes place. Creation, maintainance and inhalation. If he doesn't will, a blade of grass will not shake. Yes, have full faith in it. So...

Devotee: So, if we try to follow that instruction, gradually, gradually we will see, how he is working and faith will develop like that?

Gour Govinda Swami: Completely depend upon the will of Krishna. Yes. [Verse not found] Gita says, Krishna says, you have to work. Karma. Do you understand? Engage yourself in activity. What sort of activity? The activity of Krishna. Krishna service, that is the real activity. Do you understand? What is the result, He is para-datta, He is the giver of the result. You are not. Only you have right to work, no right for the result, phala. Fruit. He (Krishna) has right. If you expect something, don't say, "I did this thing, I couldn't get, what is this? Finished! Then the faith is gone. One should understand I have no right. The result and the fruit, Krishna has the right. It is up to Krishna, He has Supreme will, nobody can question, why you didn't give me this thing?! You have no right to ask him. You are such a fool. Yes... It's all up to Him.

Devotee: We are trying to force Krishna to give us the result of which we desire.

Gour Govinda Swami: No, no, no. He is not your order supplier. His sweet will, and He knows what is good for you. He knows, yes. You need slap. He knows it good for you, so Krishna arranges such thing, so you will get a slap. You rascal!! But you expect, patting, patting, but He things you deserve a slap. Do you understand? It is Krishna's will. He knows what is good for me, give me that result, why should you say, no no it's not good, I will give up this thing, therefore complete depend upon the will of Krishna, yes his will is best. Yes He has Supreme will In all respect. Thank you. Hare Krishna!

Gour Govinda Swami: No, Lord Hari!

Devotee: Hari, Hari.

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes!

Devotee: Hare is Radharani.

Gour Govinda Swami: Hare is Radharani, Hare is Hari also! Bass. In the conditional stage, we say Hare Krishna, Radhe Krishna. Yugal-bhajan. For us, conditional. But for them Hari, Rama, Krishna. Do you follow. Yes.

 


tava kathāmṛtaḿ tapta-jīvanaḿ
kavibhir īḍitaḿ kalmaṣāpaham
śravaṇa-mańgalaḿ śrīmad ātataḿ
bhuvi gṛṇanti ye bhūri-dā janāh,

O' Krishna! Your Kathamrta, Your Namamrta, Your nectarian Katha. The nectar which eminates from your trancedental katha, topics, and the nectar which eminates from your trancedental Holy Name, is Taptajivanam, a soothing balm for the afflicted heart. A soothing balm for the afflicted heart. Those who are material conditioned, their heart is afflicted with the three tapas. Adyatmika, Adidevika, adibautika, so this is also a soothing balm for them. Hare Krishna!

But the Gopis headed by Radharani, they are afflicted by virahata, virahata, the pangs of separation. This is also a soothing balm for that. Virahata, so that the chant:

Devotee: The Holy Name if it is purely chanted it can take us back to Goloka Vrindavan.

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes.

Devotee: But we chant the vaisnava gayatri.

Gour Govinda Swami: Huh?!

Devotee: But we chant the vaisnava-gayatri. How far does that take us.

Gour Govinda Swami: Are baba! Why Gayatri you chant?

Devotee: I just want to know, what is that, if I compare...

Gour Govinda Swami: Gayatri will help you, in making your oscillating mind fixed. No oscillation will be there. Therefore Gayatri chanting is there. That will help you. Help your mind to fix in the Holy Name. Do you follow me? That is Gayatri. No oscillation will be there. The mind is very fickle, very fickle, but gayatri helps. The fickle mind will be fixed at the Lotus Feet of Krishna. On the Holy Name. Do you understand? No oscillation will be there, that is Gayatri. Do you follow me. Yeah. It helps only. But the Holy Name will give you prema. Yes. Not the gayatri. It helps. Gayatri helps. 

Devotee: Some says that gayatri will take you to liberation only.

Gour Govinda Swami: the aim, Namabhasa gives liberation. Than what is that? Ajamila got. What is that? Ajamila got, such a great sinful person. He asked his son Narayana, come. He asked his son, so he got. It is very easy. Mukti is [inaudible]. The bhakta kicks it. Get out! Chalo, I don't want. Mukti is standing with her folding hands in the que at his doorstep. At the doorstep of the bhakta, mukti is standing with her folded hands. I have come for service, please. Please allow me.

Devotee: Gurudeva, we are Rasikas, but we are mumukshu and bubukshu

Gour Govinda Swami: Why are you becoming mumukshu and bubukshu, become rasika- bhakta. Relish this rasa, mellow. How sweet it is, necterean it is. Relish it. Gokul Das has jaundice, so he taste it is bitter. The sweet tastes bitter. Suffering, suffering, suffering. Gokul Das, chant Hare Krishna, cry, cry, lament, cry and chant. Krishna has given you an opportunity now, chant day and night, twenty-four hours.

Devotee: I don't have tast Guru Maharaja.

Gour Govinda Swami: Therefor I say, you should develop taste. Yes, jaundice person, you see. He is jaundice, if you give him sugar candy he will say, poeh! It is bitter. If you give him neem leave, he will say it is very sweet. This is jaundice. But the Kaviraja will give this medicine prescribed. Take this medicine and take it with the sugar candy. "This tastes bitter and is prescribed", yes that is the medicine! It tastes bitter, that is the medicine. It tastes bitter, still you take it, have it. It will cure your disease. then you will taste how sweet it is. What was bitter, now it is so sweet! Yes. Tough it is so bitter, still take it. Constantly have it, and you will be cured of your disease. Then you will taste how sweet, Ohhh!! So necterean, so sweet. Yes, very tasty.

If what is bitter and you won't take it, how will you be cured? No question at all. Do you understand? Gokul Das... 

Devotee: Guru Maharaja, is there any difference between chanting the Holy Name and hearing the pastimes of Krishna?

Gour Govinda Swami: The Holy Name, I say, it contains all the pastimes of Krishna. Krsnera samagyar lila nama avidya mam. Harinama Cintamani, all the lilas, all the pastimes of Krishna are there in His Holy Name. Yes, if you chant pure name, you will see all the transcendental lilas will manifest before you. It is superior. It is better. Yes.

Devotee: If one seems to have more faith in hearing the lilas than having faith in chanting the Holy Name of [Inaudible].

Gour Govinda Swami: This taste is better, better taste. He gets everything. One who chants the Holy Name he gets everthing.

Devotee: It is a better taste. 

Gour Govinda Swami: A better taste.

Devotee: But then one may ask, why don't I get any taste for it. I like to hear the pastimes of Krishna, but chanting the Holy Names of Krishna for hours...

Gour Govinda Swami: You are hearing, but you will see before you. All the transcendental pastimes will manifest before you. You are one with them. Taking part in it. You are hearing the transcendental pastimes of Krishna and getting pleasure. But by chanting the Holy Name, all the transcendental pastimes will manifest before you. and you will take part in it, and one with it. As Mahaprabhu says, "Oh, I had gone to Vrindavan, hearing the sweet flute of Krishna. I had gone to Vrindavan. Krishna was doing his boat pastimes in Yamuna. I was standing there, watching there, taking part in it. Why did you bring me here?

Devotee: I follow that stage of Mahaprabhu, when He chants the Holy Name.

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes. Het gets that thing. Do you understand?

Devotee: When I chant the Holy Name, there is a fast difference.

Gour Govinda Swami: Mahaprabhu teaches us practically to chant in this way and get this. Mahaprabhu came to teach us this thing. You should do like this. Then you will get this result. Bass. Why not!

Devotee: He was a madman after that thing.

Gour Govinda Swami: Yes, you will become mad. You are a mad fellow. Yes, materially crazy. Now become mad for Krishna. Mad after Krishna, aim of Krishna. Yes, that's a very good madness. Pagal.

Devotee: We try sometimes, but it seems like jumping for the moon. It seems like we try. We jump and jump and jump.

Gour Govinda Swami: It is not an artificially baba! It's gotten natural. Don't try artificially. If your chanting is pure, automatically. It's automatically. It will make you dance, it will make you mad baba! Not try artificially.
